@article{fdi:010091183, title = {{E}xploring fruit lipid diversity in a neglected group of tropical palms : the tribe {P}hytelepheae}, author = {{R}omero-{E}st{\'e}vez, {D}. and {V}aissayre, {V}irginie and {M}orcillo, {F}. and {M}ontúfar, {R}. and {D}ussert, {S}t{\'e}phane}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {T}he palm tribe {P}hytelepheae (vegetable ivory palms) produces oleaginous fruits traditionally consumed by indigenous and local communities. {W}e therefore analyzed the oil content as well as fatty acid ({FA}), carotenoid, and tocochromanol composition of fruits collected from 35 palm trees in their natural habitats, namely {P}hytelephas aequatorialis ({P}a, n = 28), {A}phandra natalia ({A}n, n = 5), and {A}mmandra decasperma ({A}d, n = 2). {R}esults: {A}verage mesocarp oil content was high in {P}a and {A}n (ca. 30% dry mass [{DM}]) but not in {A}d (10% {DM}). {H}owever, significant differences in fruit oil content between {P}a populations were observed. {F}urther, {FA} composition varied significantly among species and between {P}a populations. {T}he main {FA}s were oleic (17%-73%), palmitic (17%-41%), linoleic (2%-32%), and stearic (3%-13%) acids. {T}he mesocarp oil of some {P}a palms contained a high amount (>20%) of linoleic acid and a low amount of saturated {FA} (<25%). {A} high variability of total tocochromanol (89, 122, and 145 mg/kg oil for {P}a, {A}n, and {A}d, respectively) and total carotenoids (96, 42, and 157 mg/kg for {P}a, {A}n, and {A}d, respectively) content was also found. {C}onclusion: {T}he fruits of the neglected {P}hytelepheae palms may represent a valuable source of lipids, including the essential {FA} linoleic acid and lipid-soluble vitamins, and help to diversify dietary lipid sources in {E}cuadorian geographical areas where there is a high rate of saturated fat consumption.}, keywords = {carotenoids ; essential fatty acids ; ivory palms ; provitamin {A} ; tagua ; vitamin {E} ; {EQUATEUR}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{JSFA} {R}eports}, volume = {3}, numero = {11}, pages = {549--560}, ISSN = {2573-5098}, year = {2023}, DOI = {10.1002/jsf2.158}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010091183}, }
