@article{fdi:010091115, title = {{S}ystematic search of circular structures using satellite imagery to identify potential new impact structures in {M}auritania}, author = {{N}avee, {E}. {O}. {M}. and {B}aratoux, {D}avid and {A}oudjehane, {H}. {C}. and {M}hamdi, {H}. {S}. and {R}aji, {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{M}auritania, with its ancient ({A}rchean to {P}aleoproterozoic) and desertic terrains and gentle relief, has been underexplored in terms of impact structures. {T}o date, two confirmed impact craters, namely {T}enoumer and {A}ouelloul, and four circular structures for which an impact origin has been suggested, are known in {M}auritania. {T}his work aims at a systematic exploration of circular structures in {M}auritania and provide a comprehensive database to support their exploration and elucidate their origin. {T}his approach includes multi-scale search on {G}oogle {E}arth images, and a preliminary assessment of their origin using available geological, geophysical, and geochemical data as well as {D}igital {E}levation {M}odels. {A} total of 50 new circular structures were detected during our survey, adding to four candidates previously identified. {T}hey are distributed throughout the territory with an important fraction of them being located in the {T}aoudeni basin. {T}he diameters of these structures vary from 60 m to 7.5 km with a right-skewed distribution. {A} preliminary assessment of the possible origins of these circular structures is proposed and the most promising candidates for potential meteoritic impact sites are listed for future investigations.}, keywords = {{MAURITANIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {A}frican {E}arth {S}ciences}, volume = {216}, numero = {}, pages = {105303 [19 ]}, ISSN = {1464-343{X}}, year = {2024}, DOI = {10.1016/j.jafrearsci.2024.105303}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010091115}, }
