@article{fdi:010091080, title = {{C}otton and post-{N}eolithic investment agriculture in tropical {A}sia and {A}frica, with two routes to {W}est {A}frica}, author = {{F}uller, {D}. {Q}. and {C}hampion, {L}ouis and {C}astillo, {C}. {C}. and den {H}ollander, {A}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}his article provides an up-to-date review of the origins and spread of cottons in the {O}ld {W}orld based on archaeobotanical evidence, and explores the routes and socioeconomic context through which cotton cultivation became established across the tropics and sub-tropics of {A}sia and {A}frica. {T}wo cotton species were domesticated in the {O}ld {W}orld, one of which was grown for millennia as a long-lived tree ( {G}ossypium arboreum ) and the other as a shrub over several years ( {G}ossypium herbaceum ). {W}hile {G}. arboreum began to be cultivated during the {M}iddle {H}olocene (7000 -4000 years ago) in {P}akistan and {N}orthwest {I}ndia, {G}. herbaceum was likely domesticated in {A}frica, perhaps in {S}udan. {E}vidence for cultivation of cotton in {S}udan dates from around 2000 years ago, the same period that import of cotton from {I}ndia into the {R}oman world was common. {T}he spread of cotton through the {A}frican continent involved three trajectories. {I}n southeast {A}frica, its near coastal islands and {M}adgascar, received cotton, inferred to be {G}. arboreum from {I}ndia, around 1000 years ago in the context of increasing contact across the {I}ndian ocean. {A}s for western {A}frica, we postulate two dispersal routes: an oasis route through the {S}ahara and {S}ahel that focused on {G}. herbaceum, and a savanna route further south that brought {G}. arboreum to {C}ameroon, {B}enin and {G}hana.}, keywords = {{C}ash crop ; {C}raft production ; {U}rbanization ; {A}rchaeobotany ; {P}aleoethnobotany ; {A}griculture ; {AFRIQUE} ; {ASIE} ; {AFRIQUE} {DE} {L}'{OUEST}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {A}rchaeological {S}cience-{R}eports}, volume = {57}, numero = {}, pages = {104649 [13 p.]}, ISSN = {2352-409{X}}, year = {2024}, DOI = {10.1016/j.jasrep.2024.104649}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010091080}, }
