It determines that one of the striking features of Alpine carvings is that they involve megaliths as well as natural rocks. The article then considers the significance of the media used for the images and their context, and discusses the representations of social life that are depicted in these carvings. It also examines the chronological order of the carvings, and analyses the evolution of the themes and the different types of rock face.
