  abstract = {{T}his article studies rock and {A}lpine carvings that appeared from the {C}halcolithic to the {M}iddle {B}ronze {A}ge. {I}t determines that one of the striking features of {A}lpine carvings is that they involve megaliths as well as natural rocks. {T}he article then considers the significance of the media used for the images and their context, and discusses the representations of social life that are depicted in these carvings. {I}t also examines the chronological order of the carvings, and analyses the evolution of the themes and the different types of rock face. {F}inally, the article takes a look at the different types of visual imagery present in the landscape.},
