@article{fdi:010090749, title = {{T}he biological condition of {F}rench rivers has not improved over the last seventeen years according to the national {F}ish-{B}ased-{I}ndex ({FBI})}, author = {{I}rz, {P}. and {V}igneron, {T}. and {P}oulet, {N}. and {R}ichard, {B}. and {O}berdorff, {T}hierry}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{W}e evaluate, for the first time, variations of the national {F}ish-{B}ased-{I}ndex ({FBI}) over a seventeen-year period for 1583 sampled sites evenly distributed across the {F}rench territory. {A}s far as we know this is one of the first studies analyzing the temporal trends of a fish-based biotic indicator for such a consistent set of records going back over almost two decades. {O}ur results provide four important insights. {F}irst, the index is efficient in discriminating sites in good condition from sites experiencing anthropogenic disturbances. {S}econd, according to the index, the ecological state of {F}rench riverine fish assemblages is rather poor, as around half of the assessed sites, thought to reflect the diverse conditions within the {F}rench riverine system, are significantly impaired. {T}hird, according to the index, there is no noticeable amelioration through time of sites fish assemblage structure and function despite management efforts initiated two decades ago to comply with the {EU}'s 2000 {W}ater {F}ramework {D}irective. {F}ourth, the index might start being influenced by climate change as early signs of response to warming are happening since the last 10 yr. {A}ccording to the {FBI}, the current efforts for improving the biological condition of riverine systems in {F}rance are not yet creating desired outcomes.}, keywords = {{F}reshwater ; bioassessment ; long-term monitoring ; population dynamics ; reference conditions ; {FRANCE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{K}nowledge and {M}anagement of {A}quatic {E}cosystems}, numero = {425}, pages = {11 [10 ]}, ISSN = {1961-9502}, year = {2024}, DOI = {10.1051/kmae/2024007}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010090749}, }
