@article{fdi:010090712, title = {{E}ffects of shade tree legumes on cacao biomass and bean yields after 20 years of intercropping in {I}vory {C}oast}, author = {{S}ilue, {B}. {K}. and {K}on{\'e}, {A}. {W}. and {K}otaix, {A}. {J}. {A}. and {C}oulibaly, {K}. and {A}{\¨ie}dara, {S}. and {C}hapuis {L}ardy, {L}ydie and {M}asse, {D}ominique}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he choice of tree species planted with cacao trees is essential for ensuring the efficiency and sustainability of cacao farming systems. {T}his raises the question of the long-term impact of associated tree legumes ({ATL}s) on cacao bean yields and biomass accumulation. {T}his study was carried out in accordance with four-block randomised experimental design in {D}ivo ({I}vory {C}oast, {W}est {A}frica). {T}he study involved cacao-{A}lbizia lebbeck ({C}acao-{A}lb) and cacao-{A}cacia mangium ({C}acao-{A}ca) intercrops and unshaded cacao plots ({C}ontrol). {A}fter 20 years of intercropping, we assessed cacao dendrometry (height, circumference, biomass, and biomass {C}-stock) and production (number of pods per tree and bean yield at the plot level) as well as soil fertility (soil organic matter ({SOM}) concentration) at various distances from {ATL}s ({D}1:0-1.75 m; {D}2:3.25-5 m; {D}3:7-9 m). {T}he distance from the {ATL}s had no significant effect on the measured cacao dendrometric parameters, except for cacao height. {I}n contrast, the {C}acao-{A}ca association had a negative impact on the {SOM} concentration (-22%), cacao tree height (-6.15%), and productivity parameters (biomass: -12.4%; bean yield: -43%). {H}owever, {C}acao-{A}lb and the {C}ontrol had no significant differences in terms of {SOM}, tree biomass, or bean production. {I}ntercropping cacao with the tested tree legumes did not enhance cacao productivity and, in some cases, hindered it, depending on the {ATL} species. {T}his study highlighted the importance of identifying appropriate shade tree legume species that could be promoted in cacao-based agroforestry systems.}, keywords = {cacao agroforestry systems ; {A}lbizia lebbeck ; {A}cacia mangium ; cacao ; biomass {C}-stock ; cacao yield ; {COTE} {D}'{IVOIRE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}xperimental {A}griculture}, volume = {60}, numero = {}, pages = {e16 [15 ]}, ISSN = {0014-4797}, year = {2024}, DOI = {10.1017/s0014479724000097}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010090712}, }
