@article{fdi:010090688, title = {{E}arthworms impact the availability of {S}i to plants in northern {V}ietnamese paddy fields}, author = {{J}ouquet, {P}ascal and {V}an {P}ham, {Q}. and {B}ottinelli, {N}icolas and {N}guyen, {M}. {N}. and {Q}uan, {D}. {T}. and {M}eunier, {J}. {D}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}ilicon ({S}i) is an essential element for the growth and development of rice plants, playing a crucial role in their overall health and productivity. {T}his study aimed to measure earthworm's impact on {S}i dynamics in northern {V}ietnam's paddy fields. {T}he properties of earthworm casts from 23 different sites were compared to the surrounding topsoil. {T}he results showed that the casts were enriched in biogenic silica (herein phytoliths) and plantavailable {S}i (measured through acid acetic extraction, {S}i{AC}) compared to the reference topsoil. {A}lso, casts had a higher sand content, while their carbon content was similar to the reference soils. {T}his suggests a possible preference for sand particles by earthworms (e.g., for grinding plant material within their gizzards) and/or the consumption of soil from another layer enriched in sand content. {T}he influence of earthworms on {S}i dynamics was found to be dependent on the soil's environmental properties. {I}n soils with low fertility (characterized by a higher proportion of sand and lower concentrations of {C} and oxides), earthworms increased the concentration of {S}i{AC}. {H}owever, beyond a certain level, the effect of earthworms on {S}i availability became neutral. {W}hile this study highlights the critical role of earthworms in paddy fields, further research is needed to understand how earthworms enhance the concentration in {S}i{AC} in the topsoil, and the consequences to rice growth and resistance to environmental hazards.}, keywords = {{B}ioturbation ; {F}looded environment ; {G}lyphidrilus papillatus ; {P}hytoliths ; {A}vailable silicon ; {VIET} {NAM}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}uropean {J}ournal of {S}oil {B}iology}, volume = {121}, numero = {}, pages = {103615 [7 p.]}, ISSN = {1164-5563}, year = {2024}, DOI = {10.1016/j.ejsobi.2024.103615}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010090688}, }
