@article{fdi:010090639, title = {{A}ntibiotic resistance profiles of sentinel bacteria isolated from aquaculture in {C}ambodia}, author = {{P}eng, {C}. and {M}oniroth, {S}. and {K}hy, {P}. and {C}hea, {S}. and {T}hanh, {C}. and {H}eng, {O}. and {S}arter, {S}. and {C}hheng, {S}. and {C}aruso, {D}omenico}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he misuse of antibiotics and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance ({AMR}) is a concern in the aquaculture industry because it contributes to global health risks and impacts the environment. {T}his study analyzed the {AMR} of sentinel bacteria associated with striped catfish ({P}angasianodon hypophthalmus) and giant snakehead ({C}hanna micropeltes), the two main fish species reared in the pond culture in {C}ambodia. {P}henotypic and genotypic characterization of the recovered isolates from fish, water, and sediment revealed the presence of bacteria, such as 22 species belonging to families {A}eromonadaceae, {E}nterobacteriaceae, and {P}seudomonadaceae. {A}mong 48 isolates, {A}eromonas caviae (n = 2), {A}eromonas hydrophila (n = 2), {A}eromonas ichthiosmia (n = 1), and {A}eromonas salmonicida (n = 4) were detected. {B}oth {A}. salmonicida and {A}. hydrophila are known as fish pathogens that occur worldwide in both fresh and marine water aquaculture. {A}ntibiotic susceptibility testing for {E}nterobacteriaceae and {P}seudomonadaceae species and six antibiotics for {A}eromonadaceae species revealed antibiotic resistance patterns of 24 (50%) isolates among the 48 isolates with higher multiple antibiotic resistance index scores (>0.2). {A}ll the isolates of {E}nterobacteriaceae were susceptible to ciprofloxacin. {C}iprofloxacin is a frontline antibiotic that is not recommended for use in aquaculture. {T}his study expands our knowledge of the {AMR} status in aquaculture farms, which is very limited in {C}ambodia.}, keywords = {antibiotic-resistant ; aquaculture ; {C}ambodia ; giant snakehead ; multiple ; antibiotic resistance index ; striped catfish ; {CAMBODGE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {W}ater and {H}ealth}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {[11 p.]}, ISSN = {1477-8920}, year = {2024}, DOI = {10.2166/wh.2024.101}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010090639}, }
