@article{fdi:010090514, title = {{G}ymnocranius indicus, a new large-eye seabream from the {I}ndian {O}cean}, author = {{C}hen, {W}. {J}. and {M}iki, {R}. and {N}evill, {J}. and {B}orsa, {P}hilippe}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{G}ymnocranius indicus sp. nov. is described as a new species of the fish subfamily {M}onotaxinae ({S}paroidea: {L}ethrinidae), a group of commercially important species distributed throughout the {I}ndo-{W}est {P}acific, on the basis of 16 specimens collected from the {I}ndian {O}cean. {T}he new species shares the following characters with its western {P}acific sibling, the eyebrowed large-eye seabream, {G}. superciliosus: elongate body, distinctive and conspicuous dark patch above the eye, prominent forehead, moderately forked caudal fin, its lobes slightly convex inside, flank silvery, and reddish-to-red dorsal, pectoral, anal and caudal fins. {H}owever, principal component analysis based on seven morphological variables distinguished most specimens from the {I}ndian {O}cean from {G}. superciliosus. {T}he most influential variable in the analysis was the eye diameter, significantly larger in the new species than in {G}. superciliosus. {A}ll specimens of the new species that were examined also lacked blue ornamentation on the snout and cheek. {A}t the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit-{I} locus, the mean genetic p-distance between the two species was 0.039. {W}ith {G}ymnocranius indicus sp. nov., the genus now includes 12 valid nominal species; three additional species remain undescribed.}, keywords = {{COI} gene sequence ; description ; {G}ymnocranius sp. {H} ; {G}ymnocranius ; superciliosus ; morphology ; new species ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of the {M}arine {B}iological {A}ssociation of the {U}nited {K}ingdom}, volume = {104}, numero = {}, pages = {e38 [10 p.]}, ISSN = {0025-3154}, year = {2024}, DOI = {10.1017/s0025315424000274}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010090514}, }
