@article{fdi:010090484, title = {{B}ioconcentration, bioaccumulation and biomagnification of mercury in plankton of the {M}editerranean {S}ea}, author = {{T}esán-{O}nrubia, {J}.{A}. and {H}eimbürger-{B}oavida, {L}.{E}. and {D}ufour, {A}. and {H}armelin-{V}ivien, {M}. and {G}arcía-{A}r{\'e}valo, {I}. and {K}noery, {J}. and {T}homas, {B}. and {C}arlotti, {F}. and {T}edetti, {M}arc and {B}anaru, {D}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{P}lankton plays a prominent role in the bioaccumulation of mercury ({H}g). {T}he {MERITE}-{HIPPOCAMPE} campaign was carried out in spring 2019 along a north-south transect including coastal and offshore areas of the {M}editerranean {S}ea. {S}ampling of sea water and plankton by pumping and nets was carried out in the chlorophyll maximum layer. {T}wo size-fractions of phytoplankton (0.7-2.7 and 2.7-20 {M}m) and five of zooplankton (between 60 and >2000 {M}m) were separated, and their total mercury ({TH}g) and monomethylmercury ({MMH}g) contents were measured. {B}ioconcentration of {TH}g was significantly higher in the smallest phytoplankton size-fraction dominated by {S}ynechococcus spp. {T}he bioaccumulation and biomagnification of {MMH}g in zooplankton was influenced by size, food sources, biochemical composition and trophic level. {MMH}g was biomagnified in the plankton food web, while {TH}g decreased toward higher trophic levels. {H}igher {MMH}g concentrations were measured in oligotrophic areas. {P}lankton communities in the {S}outhern {M}editerranean {S}ea had lower {MMH}g concentrations than those in the {N}orthern {M}editerranean {S}ea. {T}hese results highlighted the influence of environmental conditions and trophodynamics on the transfer of {H}g in {M}editerranean plankton food webs, with implications for higher trophic level consumers.}, keywords = {{MEDITERRANEE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}arine {P}ollution {B}ulletin}, volume = {194, {P}art {B}}, numero = {}, pages = {115439 [11 ]}, ISSN = {0025-326{X}}, year = {2023}, DOI = {10.1016/j.marpolbul.2023.115439}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010090484}, }
