@article{fdi:010090318, title = {{S}ocial development and biodiversity conservation synergies for the {W}est {A}frican giraffe in a human-wildlife landscape}, author = {{G}asparová, {K}. and {B}lanco, {J}ulien and {G}likman, {J}. {A}. and {F}ennessy, {J}. and {Z}abeirou, {A}. {R}. {M}. and {M}ahamadou, {A}. {R}. {A}. and {A}zihou, {F}. and {R}abeil, {T}. and {B}randlová, {K}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {W}est {A}frican giraffe is restricted to {N}iger, but historically it inhabited much of the {S}udano-{S}ahelian zone. {T}he population is concentrated in the '{G}iraffe {Z}one' ({GZ}), an unprotected area with a high human population density. {S}ince the mid-1990s, the giraffe population has steadily increased mainly due to the collective social and conservation initiatives of the government, non-governmental organizations and the local community. {I}n 2018, the first {W}est {A}frican giraffe satellite population was established through the reintroduction of eight individuals into {G}adabedji {B}iosphere {R}eserve ({GBR}). {I}n this study, we aimed to describe the current state of human-giraffe coexistence, human attitudes towards giraffe and human habits of natural resources use through a questionnaire survey conducted in the {GZ} and {GBR}. {A}lthough most of the {GZ} respondents highlighted crop damage caused by giraffe, we also found overall positive attitudes towards the animals. {M}ost respondents from both sites expressed positive attitudes towards giraffe, highlighting that they do not see poaching as a major current threat. {H}owever, the giraffe population continues to be directly threatened by habitat loss through firewood cutting, livestock overgrazing and agriculture expansion. {L}ong-term conservation of the {W}est {A}frican giraffe is dependent on better habitat protection and understanding of current human-giraffe coexistence through ensuring that giraffe presence will benefit local communities across their range.}, keywords = {{A}ttitude ; crop damage ; {G}iraffa camelopardalis peralta ; human-wildlife coexistence ; natural resources use ; {N}iger ; {W}est {A}frican giraffe ; {NIGER}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}nvironmental {C}onservation}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {[8 ]}, ISSN = {0376-8929}, year = {2023}, DOI = {10.1017/s0376892923000243}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010090318}, }
