@article{fdi:010090310, title = {{A}mazon {R}iver plume habitats shape planktonic cnidarian assemblages in the {W}estern {A}tlantic}, author = {{T}osetto, {E}. {G}. and {N}eumann-{L}eitao, {S}. and {A}raujo, {M}. and {D}imoune, {D}. {M}. and {B}ertrand, {A}rnaud and {N}ogueira, {M}., {J}r.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he impact of the {A}mazon {R}iver freshwater plume on planktonic cnidarians over neritic and oceanic provinces is unknown. {T}o provide further knowledge we took advantage of an oceanographic cruise performed in {O}ctober 2012 in the {W}estern {A}tlantic off the {N}orth {B}razilian coast (8 & {DEG};{N}, 51 & {DEG};{W}-3.5 & {DEG};{S}, 37 & {DEG};{W}). {A} complex and dynamic system was observed, with strong currents and eddies dispersing the plume over a large area. {O}ur results show that the {A}mazon {R}iver shapes marine habitats with a thin highly productive surface layer compressed by a deeper oxygen minimum zone both over the shelf and in the open ocean. {W}e hypothesized that such habitat structure is particularly advantageous to planktonic cnidarians, which have low metabolic rates, being able to survive in hypoxic zones, resulting in high species richness and abundance. {O}ver the shelf, distinctions were sharp and the area under the influence of the plume presented a diverse assemblage occurring in large abundance, while outside the plume, the hydromedusa {L}iriope tetraphylla was dominant and occurred almost alone. {D}ivergences in the oceanic province were less pronounced, but still expressive being mostly related to the abundance of dominant species. {W}e concluded that {A}mazon {R}iver plume is a paramount physical feature that profoundly affects the dynamics of the mesoscale habitat structure in the {W}estern {E}quatorial {A}tlantic {O}cean and that such habitat structure is responsible for shaping planktonic cnidarian assemblages both in neritic and oceanic provinces.}, keywords = {{ATLANTIQUE} ; {BRESIL} ; {ZONE} {EQUATORIALE} ; {AMAZONE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}los {O}ne}, volume = {18}, numero = {8}, pages = {e0290667 [25 ]}, ISSN = {1932-6203}, year = {2023}, DOI = {10.1371/journal.pone.0290667}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010090310}, }
