@article{fdi:010090235, title = {{M}etallic trace elements in marine sponges living in a semi-enclosed tropical lagoon}, author = {{M}aggioni, {F}. and {S}tenger, {P}. {L}. and {L}etourneur, {Y}. and {J}ourand, {P}hilippe and {M}ajorel, {C}larisse}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he ability of marine filter feeders to accumulate metals could help monitor the health of the marine environment. {T}his study examined the concentration of metallic trace elements ({MTE}) in two marine sponges, {R}habdastrella globostellata and {H}yrtios erectus, from three sampling zones of the semi-enclosed {B}ourake {L}agoon ({N}ew {C}aledonia, {S}outh {W}est {P}acific). {MTE} in sponge tissues, seawater, and surrounding sediments was measured using inductively coupled plasma with optical emission spectroscopy. {T}he variability in sponge {MTE} concentrations between species and sampling zones was visually discriminated using a principal component analysis ({PCA}). {S}ponges showed {F}e, {M}n, {C}r, {N}i, and {Z}n concentrations 2 to 10 times higher than in the surrounding sediments and seawater. {H}yrtios erectus accumulated 3 to 20 times more {MTE} than {R}. globostellata, except for {Z}n. {A}verage bioconcentration factors in sponge tissues were (in decreasing order) {Z}n > {N}i > {M}n > {F}e > {C}r relate to sediments and {F}e > {N}i > {M}n > {C}r > {Z}n relate to seawater. {T}he {PCA} confirmed higher {MTE} concentrations in {H}. erectus compared to {R}. globostellata. {O}ur results confirm that marine sponges can accumulate {MTE} to some extent and could be used as a tool for assessing metals contamination in lagoon ecosystems, particularly in {N}ew {C}aledonia, where 40% of the lagoon is classified as a {UNESCO} {W}orld {H}eritage {S}ite.}, keywords = {{M}arine sponges ; {M}etallic trace elements ; {B}ourake lagoon ; {N}ew {C}aledonia ; {NOUVELLE} {CALEDONIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}iometals}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {[13 p.]}, ISSN = {0966-0844}, year = {2023}, DOI = {10.1007/s10534-023-00536-3}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010090235}, }
