@article{fdi:010090164, title = {{A}ntibiotic susceptibility of cultivable microbiota from the oral cavity of captive {B}othrops atrox and {B}othrops lanceolatus : implications for the treatment of snakebite-associated infections in the {F}rench departments of {A}merica}, author = {{L}arreche, {S}. and {B}ousquet, {A}. and da {S}ilva, {L}. and {P}lanelles, {A}. and {K}sas, {R}. and {M}erens, {A}. and {C}hippaux, {J}ean-{P}hilippe}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}ntroduction: {S}econdary infection is a frequent complication after bites by {B}othrops atroxin {F}rench {G}uiana or {B}. lanceolatus in {M}artinique. {K}nowledge of the bacteria present in snake mouths is a valuable aid for determining probabilistic antibiotherapy after {B}othrops bite. {T}he objectives of this study were to describe the cultivable bacteria of the oral microbiota of the specimens of {B}. atrox and {B}. lanceolatus kept in captivity, and to study their susceptibility to antibiotics.{M}ethods: {F}ifteen {B}. atrox and 15 {B}. lanceolatus were sampled. {B}acterial cultures were performed and each morphotype on plates was identified using {MALDI}-{TOF} mass spectrometry. {A}ntibiotic susceptibility was studied using the agar disk diffusion method, with possible determination of the {MIC}s.{R}esults: {O}ne hundred and twenty-two isolates were identified: 52 isolates and 13 species in {B}. atrox, 70 isolates and 23 species in {B}. lanceolatus. {T}he main species were {P}rovidencia rettgeri, {M}organella morganii, {P}seudomonas aeruginosa, {S}taphylococcus xylosus, and {P}aeniclostridium sordellii (only in {B}. lanceolatus mouths). {F}or {B}. atrox, 96% of isolates were susceptible to piperacillin/tazobactam, cefepime, imipenem and meropenem, 94% to ciprofloxacin and 76% to cefotaxime and ceftriaxone. {F}or {B}. lanceolatus, 97% of isolates were susceptible to meropenem, 96% to cefepime, 93% to imipenem and piperacillin/tazobactam, 80% to ciprofloxacin, and 75% to cefotaxime and ceftriaxone. {M}any isolates were resistant towards amoxicillin/clavulanate. {C}onclusion: {A}mong currently recommended antibiotics, cefepime and piperacillin/tazobactam seem more suitable than cefotaxime or ceftriaxone in the event of a {B}othrops bite. {C}iprofloxacin may also be considered for {B}. atrox.}, keywords = {{S}nakebite ; {A}ntibiotic resistance ; {F}rench {G}uiana ; {M}artinique ; {GUYANE} {FRANCAISE} ; {ANTILLES}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}nfectious {D}iseases {N}ow}, volume = {53}, numero = {7}, pages = {104721 [5 p.]}, ISSN = {2666-9927}, year = {2023}, DOI = {10.1016/j.idnow.2023.104721}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010090164}, }
