@article{fdi:010090063, title = {{G}enetic structure and {TAL}ome analysis highlight a high level of diversity in {B}urkinabe {X}anthomonas {O}ryzae pv. oryzae populations}, author = {{D}iallo, {A}. and {W}onni, {I}. and {S}icard, {A}. and {B}londin, {L}. and {G}agnevin, {L}. and {V}erni{\`e}re, {C}. and {S}zurek, {B}oris and {H}utin, {M}athilde}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}acterial {L}eaf {B}light of rice ({BLB}) caused by {X}anthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae ({X}oo) is a major threat for food security in many rice growing countries including {B}urkina {F}aso, where the disease was first reported in the 1980's. {I}n line with the intensification of rice cultivation in {W}est-{A}frica, {BLB} incidence has been rising for the last 15 years. {W}est-{A}frican strains of {X}oo differ from their {A}sian counterparts as they (i) are genetically distant, (ii) belong to new races and, (iii) contain reduced repertoires of {T}ranscription {A}ctivator {L}ike ({TAL}) effector genes. {I}n order to investigate the evolutionary dynamics of {X}oo populations in {B}urkina {F}aso, 177 strains were collected from 2003 to 2018 in three regions where {BLB} is occurring. {M}ultilocus {VNTR} {A}nalysis ({MLVA}-14) targeting 10 polymorphic loci discriminated 24 haplotypes and showed that {X}oo populations were structured according to their geographical localization and year of collection. {C}onsidering their major role in {X}oo pathogenicity, we assessed the {TAL} effector repertoires of the 177 strains upon {RFLP}-based profiling. {S}urprisingly, an important diversity was revealed with up to eight different {RFLP} patterns. {F}inally, comparing neutral vs. tal effector gene diversity allowed to suggest scenarios underlying the evolutionary dynamics of {X}oo populations in {B}urkina {F}aso, which is key to rationally guide the deployment of durably resistant rice varieties against {BLB} in the country.}, keywords = {{R}ice ; {B}acterial leaf blight ; {X}oo ; {TALE} ; {G}enotyping ; {M}icrosatellites ; {M}olecular epidemiology}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{R}ice}, volume = {16}, numero = {1}, pages = {33 [14 ]}, ISSN = {1939-8425}, year = {2023}, DOI = {10.1186/s12284-023-00648-x}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010090063}, }
