@article{fdi:010089986, title = {{P}hysical, chemical, and microbiological characteristics of microbial mats ({KOPARA}) in the {S}outh {P}acific atolls of {F}rench {P}olynesia}, author = {{C}he, {L}.{M}. and {A}ndr{\'e}fou{\¨e}t, {S}erge and {B}othorel, {V}. and {G}uezennec, {M}. and {R}ougeaux, {H}. and {G}uezennec, {J}. and {D}eslandes, {E}. and {T}richet, {J}. and {M}atheron, {R}. and {C}ampion, {T}.{L}. and {P}ayri, {C}. and {C}aumette, {P}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{M}icrobial mats that develop in shallow brackish and hyposaline ponds in the rims of two {F}rench polynesian atolls ({R}angiroa and {T}etiaroa) were intensively investigated during the past three years. {C}omparative assessment of these mats (called kopara in polynesian language) showed remarkable similarities in their composition and structure. {D}ue to the lack of iron, the color of the cyanobacterial pigments produced remained visible through the entire depth of the mats (20-40 cm depth), with alternate green, purple, and pink layers. {P}rofiles of oxygen, sulfide, p{H}, and redox showed the anoxia of all mats from a depth of 2-3 mm. {A}nalyses of bacterial pigments and bacterial lipids showed that all mats consisted of stratified layers of cyanobacteria (mainly {P}hormidium, {S}chizothrix, {S}cytonema) and purple and green phototrophic bacteria. {T}he purple and green phototrophic bacteria cohabit with sulfate reducers ({D}esulfovibrio and {D}esulfobacter) and other heterotrophic bacteria. {T}he microscopic bacterial determination emphasized the influence of salinity on the bacterial diversity, with higher diversity at low salinity, mainly for purple nonsulfur bacteria. {A}nalyses of organic material and of exopolymers were also undertaken. {D}ifference and similarities between mats from geomorphological, microbiological, and chemical points of view are discussed to provide multicriteria of classification of mats.}, keywords = {{POLYNESIE} {FRANCAISE} ; {PACIFIQUE} ; {TUAMOTU} {ARCHIPEL} ; {RANGIROA} {ATOLL} ; {TETIAROA} {ATOLL}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}anadian {J}ournal of {M}icrobiology}, volume = {47}, numero = {11}, pages = {994--1012}, ISSN = {0008-4166}, year = {2001}, DOI = {10.1139/w01-106}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010089986}, }
