@article{fdi:010089963, title = {{R}evisiting {B}attistini : {P}leistocene coastal evolution of southwestern {M}adagascar}, author = {{B}oyden, {P}. and {W}eil-{A}ccardo, {J}ennifer and {D}eschamps, {P}ierre and {G}odeau, {N}. and {J}aosedy, {N}. and {G}uihou, {A}. and {R}ajaonarivelo, {M}.{N}. and {O}'{L}eary, {M}. and {H}umblet, {M}. and {R}overe, {A}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he study of paleo shorelines, particularly of those formed during the late {Q}uaternary, provides robust insights into past climate variability. {A}dvances in surveying techniques and chronological methodologies have dramatically improved the inter-comparability of regional and basin-wide paleo shoreline surveys. {H}owever, these advances have been applied unevenly across the globe. {T}his is especially true in southwestern {M}adagascar, where, in the 1960s and 1970s, emerged {P}leistocene beach and reef facies were first described in detail and dated to {M}arine {I}sotope {S}tage ({MIS}) 5a using {U}-{T}h alpha activity counting by french geologist {R}en{\'e} {B}attistini. {N}ow, 50 years on, no further analysis of the coastal sequence has been made. {I}n this study, we present an updated late {P}leistocene coastal evolution model for the southwestern {M}adagascar coast. {U}tilizing a combination of {S}tructure-from-{M}otion/{M}ulti-{V}iew {S}tereo techniques and differential {G}lobal {N}avigation {S}atellite {S}ystem surveys, we have created five high-resolution 3{D} outcrop reconstructions that have, in turn, been chronologically constrained using 10 {U}-series ages from both in situ and reworked coral samples. {O}ur data suggest that the emerged reef was deposited during {MIS} 5e (?125 ka), then was covered by intertidal and beach sediment (including redeposited coral clasts of {MIS} 5e age), and finally capped off by thick eolianites. {T}his sequence would suggest that the local sea level must have remained stable throughout {MIS} 5e in order to allow for the progradation of both the beach and reef environments.}, keywords = {{MADAGASCAR} ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN} ; {MAHAFALY} {PLATEAU}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{O}pen {Q}uaternary}, volume = {8}, numero = {14}, pages = {en ligne [17 ]}, ISSN = {2055-298{X}}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.5334/oq.112}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010089963}, }
