@article{fdi:010089671, title = {{H}igh {CO}2 in the mantle source of ocean island basanites}, author = {{L}o {F}orte, {F}. {M}. and {S}chiavi, {F}ederica and {R}ose-{K}oga, {E}. {F}. and {R}otolo, {S}. {G}. and {V}erdier-{P}aoletti, {M}. and {A}iuppa, {A}. and {Z}anon, {V}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}ome of the most {CO}2-rich magmas on {E}arth are erupted by intraplate ocean island volcanoes. {H}ere, we characterise olivine-hosted melt inclusions from recent (<10 ky) basanitic tephra erupted by {F}ogo, the only active volcano of the {C}ape {V}erde {A}rchipelago in the eastern {A}tlantic {O}cean. {W}e determine {H}2{O}, {S}, {C}l, {F} in glassy melt inclusions and recalculate the total (glass + shrinkage bubbles) {CO}2 budget by three independent methodologies. {W}e find that the {F}ogo parental basanite, entrapped as melt inclusion in forsterite-rich ({F}o80-85) olivines, contains up to -2.1 wt% {CO}2, 3-47 % of which is partitioned in the shrinkage bubbles. {T}his {CO}2 content is among the highest ever measured in melt inclusions in {OIB}s. {I}n combination with -2 wt% {H}2{O} content, our data constrain an entrapment pressure range for the most {CO}2-rich melt inclusion of 648-1430 {MP}a, with a most conservative estimate at 773-1020 {MP}a. {O}ur results therefore suggest the parental {F}ogo melt is stored in the lithospheric mantle at minimum depths of -27 to -36 km, and then injected into a vertically stacked magma ponding system. {O}verall, our results corroborate previous indications for a {CO}2-rich nature of alkaline ocean island volcanism. {W}e propose that the {F}ogo basanitic melt forms by low degrees of melting ({F} = 0.06-0.07) of a carbonenriched mantle source, containing up to 355-414 ppm {C}. {I}f global {OIB} melts are dominantly as carbon-rich as our {F}ogo results suggest, then {OIB} volcanism may cumulatively outgas as high as -16-21 {T}g of carbon yearly, hence substantially contributing to the global deep carbon cycle.}, keywords = {{A}lkaline ocean islands ; {I}ntraplate volcanism ; {F}ogo volcano ; {M}elt inclusions ; {C}ape {V}erde ; {CAP} {VERT} ; {ATLANTIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{G}eochimica et {C}osmochimica {A}cta}, volume = {368}, numero = {}, pages = {93--111}, ISSN = {0016-7037}, year = {2024}, DOI = {10.1016/j.gca.2024.01.016}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010089671}, }
