@article{fdi:010089581, title = {{COVID}-19 in 16 {W}est {A}frican countries : an assessment of the epidemiology and genetic diversity of {SARS}-{C}o{V}-2 after four epidemic waves}, author = {{N}diaye, {A}. {J}. {S}. and {B}eye, {M}. and {S}ow, {A}. and {L}o, {G}. {R}. and {P}adane, {A}. and {S}okhna, {C}heikh and {K}ane, {C}. {T}. and {C}olson, {P}. and {F}enollar, {F}. and {M}boup, {S}. and {F}ournier, {P}. {E}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{W}est {A}frica faced the {COVID}-19 pandemic in early {M}arch 2020 and, as of {M}arch 31, 2022, had more than 900,000 confirmed cases and more than 12,000 deaths. {D}uring this period, {SARS}-{C}o{V}-2 genomes evolved genetically, resulting in the emergence of distinct lineages. {T}his review was conducted to provide the epidemiological profile of {COVID}-19, the mutational profile of {SARS}-{C}o{V}-2, and the dynamics of its lineages in the 16 west {A}frican countries by analyzing data from 33 studies and seven situation reports. {F}or a more complete representation of the epidemiology and genetic diversity of {SARS}-{C}o{V}-2, we used reliable public data in addition to eligible studies. {A}s of {M}arch 31, 2022, the 16 west {A}frican countries experienced four epidemic waves with variable intensities. {H}igher mortality was noted during the third wave with a case fatality rate ({CFR}) of 1.9%. {A}fter these four epidemic waves, {L}iberia recorded the highest {CFR} (4.0%), whereas {B}enin had the lowest {CFR} (0.6%). {T}hrough mutational analysis, a high genetic heterogeneity of the genomes was observed, with a predominance of mutations in the spike protein. {F}rom this high mutational rate, different lineages emerged. {O}ur analysis of the evolutionary diversity allowed us to count 205 lineages circulating in west {A}frica. {T}his study has provided a good representation of the mutational profile and the prevalence of {SARS} {C}o{V}-2 lineages beyond the knowledge of the global epidemiology of the 16 {A}frican countries.}, keywords = {{AFRIQUE} {DE} {L}'{OUEST}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}merican {J}ournal of {T}ropical {M}edicine and {H}ygiene}, volume = {109}, numero = {4}, pages = {861--873}, ISSN = {0002-9637}, year = {2023}, DOI = {10.4269/ajtmh.22-0469}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010089581}, }
