@article{fdi:010089554, title = {{S}eismicity near {M}ayotte explained by interacting magma bodies : insights from numerical modeling}, author = {de {S}agazan, {C}. and {R}etailleau, {L}. and {G}erbault, {M}uriel and {P}eltier, {A}. and {F}euillet, {N}. and {F}ontaine, {F}. {J}. and {C}rawford, {W}. {C}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{M}ayotte island experienced a large volcanic eruption 50 km offshore in 2018-2021, creating the submarine volcano "{F}ani {M}aore". {T}he eruption was accompanied by intense seismicity at mantle depths (20-45 km), divided into a "proximal" and a "distal" cluster centered 10 and 30 km east from the island, respectively. {P}revious studies suggest that two separate magma reservoirs may lie at the top and bottom of the proximal cluster. {H}ere, we assess whether two reservoirs are a mechanically viable explanation for the proximal cluster's truncated conical shape. {W}e developed finite -element models of pressurized magma reservoirs in a 2{D} axisymmetric domain, modeling the reservoirs as compliant elastic ellipsoids embedded in an elastoplastic host rock. {W}e find that, at these depths, extremely low friction is required to generate failure at realistically low reservoir pressures. {T}his implies in turn that mechanical weakening must occur at these depths. {T}he weakening could be induced by fractures or pore fluid overpressure in the volcanic system. {W}e find that two superimposed reservoirs can generate a plastic domain between them, if they are spatially close enough. {S}everal reservoir geometries (from spherical to sill -like) are plausible. {A} conical fracture domain is more likely to appear for reservoirs with opposite pressure loads (i.e. one inflating, one deflating). {G}iven the geometrical match with the proximal seismicity cluster at {M}ayotte, we suggest that the shallower ({M}oho-depth) reservoir is inflating, creating a potential hazard for {M}ayotte island.}, keywords = {{M}ayotte ; {F}ani {M}aore ' ; {M}agma reservoir failure ; {N}umerical modeling ; {F}inite elements ; {N}on-associated plasticity ; {MAYOTTE} ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {V}olcanology and {G}eothermal {R}esearch}, volume = {446}, numero = {}, pages = {107985 [14 ]}, ISSN = {0377-0273}, year = {2024}, DOI = {10.1016/j.jvolgeores.2023.107985}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010089554}, }
