@incollection{fdi:010089444, title = {{R}outes to emancipation in {E}thiopia}, author = {{M}eckelburg, {A}. and {B}onacci, {G}iulia}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}lavery and the trade in slaves are deeply rooted in the economic and cultural history of the {E}thiopian-{E}ritrean region. {V}arious polities and societies across the {C}hristian, {S}emitic languages-speaking highlands, the {R}ift {V}alley, and its surrounding lowland regions - bordered by the {N}ile {V}alley on the west and the {R}ed {S}ea coast to the east - engaged in practices of human bondage and trade. {T}hese societies practiced manumission culturally, while the legal abolition of slavery and the slave trade were lengthy processes lasting many decades. {A}bolitionism, as a political process, was influenced by domestic and international political bargaining among regional polities and {W}estern imperial interests. {A}s the leading force of abolition in the 19th century, {B}ritain took relatively late interest in {E}thiopia. {B}ritish abolitionism emerged in the region in order to support colonial and imperial aspirations, which were attached to commercial treaties. {A}bolition thus looked like a {W}estern import and is still often discussed from a singular {W}estern perspective. {T}he uneven production of knowledge by travelers, diplomats, or the {B}ritish {A}nti-{S}lavery {S}ociety amplified the {W}estern abolitionist ideologies and overshadowed the contemporary {E}thiopian discourse on abolition. {T}he abolition of slavery became a major bone of contention in {E}thiopia's attempt to become a member of the {L}eague of {N}ations in the 1920s. {E}ventually, it became a matter of state survival in the standoff between {E}thiopia and the threat of an invasion by {I}taly, which used slavery as a pretext to justify its violent occupation. {D}espite a long period of abolitionist efforts, slavery died a slow death in {E}thiopia and has left a durable imprint on the local societies. {E}mancipation was never achieved throughout {E}thiopia. {I}n some areas, people of slave descent suffer from exclusion and marginalization until the early 21st century.}, keywords = {{ETHIOPIE} ; {ERITRA} ; {EGYPTE} ; {SOUDAN} ; {KENYA} ; {ROYAUME} {UNI} ; {ITALIE} ; {SUISSE} ; {MER} {ROUGE} ; {CORNE} {DE} {L}'{AFRIQUE} ; {NIL} {COURS} {D}'{EAU} ; {RIFT} {VALLEE}}, booktitle = {{O}xford {R}esearch {E}ncyclopedias : {A}frican {H}istory}, numero = {}, pages = {en ligne [20 ]}, address = {[{O}xford]}, publisher = {{O}xford {U}niversity {P}ress}, series = {}, year = {2023}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010089444}, }
