  abstract = {{T}he tropical {A}tlantic observing system was last reviewed in 2006 by {CLIVAR} ({C}limate and {O}cean: {V}ariability, {P}redictability and {C}hange) and {GCOS}-{GOOS}-{WCRP} through the {OOPC} ({O}cean {O}bservations {P}anel for {C}limate), with a primary focus on {PIRATA} ({P}rediction and {R}esearch {M}oored {A}rray in the {T}ropical {A}tlantic). {S}ince then, the {CLIVAR} {T}ropical {A}tlantic {C}limate {E}xperiment ({TACE}) and the {EU} program {E}nhancing {P}rediction of {T}ropical {A}tlantic {C}limate and its {I}mpacts ({PREFACE}) have been completed. {S}cientific priorities and observational technologies have evolved since 2006 and in parallel the observing system has evolved. {F}or example, {A}rgo is now fully developed and has been operating successfully for more than ten years. {PIRATA} has also expanded to new sites and has enhanced its measurement suite with higher vertical resolution in the mixed layer, and new {CO}2 and {O}2 measurements. {I}t is therefore timely to systematically review the requirements for sustained observations in the tropical {A}tlantic, to critically review the design of the sustained observing system in order to take advantage of what has been learned to date, to collectively identify new opportunities to build on past accomplishments, and to explore the possibility for expanded interdisciplinary initiatives with other communities, e.g. in biogeochemistry.



{T}o that end, a {T}ropical {A}tlantic {O}bserving {S}ystem ({TAOS}) review was proposed by the {CLIVAR} {A}tlantic {R}egion {P}anel ({ARP}) and has been organized by the {CLIVAR} {ARP} in close cooperation with the {PIRATA} consortium. {T}he review is intended to evaluate scientific progress since the last review and recommend actions to advance sustained observing efforts in the tropical {A}tlantic.},
