@article{fdi:010088387, title = {{A}ssessment of the effect of landowner type on deforestation in the {B}razilian {L}egal {A}mazon using remote sensing data}, author = {{C}abral, {A}.{I}.{R}. and {L}aques, {A}nne-{E}lisabeth and {S}aito, {C}.{H}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {B}razilian {L}egal {A}mazon contains important reservoirs of forest that are threatened by stakeholders' behaviour. {T}he {C}adastro {A}mbiental {R}ural ({CAR}; {R}ural {E}nvironmental {R}egistry) database was used to define the limits and classes of landowner according to private property size. {F}or each class, we identified the annual forest-cover/cover-loss profile at 2-year intervals from 2000 to 2020 based on {B}razilian {A}nnual {L}and {U}se and {L}and {C}over {M}apping {P}roject ({M}ap{B}iomas) and {P}rogram for {D}eforestation {M}onitoring ({PRODES}) data. {T}he analysis revealed that very large landowners dominate the {CAR}-registered area and that deforestation is influenced by landowner type. {T}he cumulative contributions to deforestation were 2 916 245.96, 1 234 216.79, 2 871 400.36, 2 805 058.62 and 2 637 485.60 ha for very large landowners, large landowners, medium landowners, small landowners and very small landowners, respectively. {V}ery large landowners (1.7% of the total number of properties) had more forest on their properties but caused the greatest amount of deforestation in total, often associated with agribusiness. {S}mall and very small landowners were more numerous (21.0% and 68.3% of the total number of properties, respectively), but they owned a small total area and contributed less to total deforestation. {P}roperty size and landownership asymmetry should be considered in deforestation control policies and commitments to the {S}ustainable {D}evelopment {G}oals agenda.}, keywords = {{BRESIL} ; {AMAZONIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}nvironmental {C}onservation}, volume = {49}, numero = {4}, pages = {225--233}, ISSN = {0376-8929}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.1017/{S}0376892922000297 }, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010088387}, }
