@article{fdi:010088304, title = {{T}he climbing flora of {N}ew {C}aledonia : a comprehensive checklist}, author = {{I}snard, {S}andrine and {B}ruy, {D}avid}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{N}ew {C}aledonia, an archipelago located in the southwest {P}acific {O}cean, hosts a rich and highly original vascular flora, distributed within a remarkable mosaic of habitats. {D}espite intensive research on the flora, the diversity and ecology of the climbing flora within the archipelago remain virtually unknown. {M}ore globally, while most liana studies have been carried out in continental forests, data from island ecosystems remain scarce. {T}his study aims to document the taxonomic diversity, and to analyze the ecology and functional traits of angiosperms climbers in {N}ew {C}aledonia. {U}sing herbarium data, exhaustive bibliographic review and field studies, we provide a checklist of 274 autochthonous climbing taxa, distributed in 45 families. {T}he majority of climbing plant species in {N}ew {C}aledonia are woody, herbaceous vine being infrequent. {C}limbing plants account for similar to 8% of the native flora (angiosperms), a rather small contribution compared with continental tropical floras. {T}here is, however, a great heterogeneity in the distribution of climbing plants within the different vegetation, as they represent up to 19% of species in the sclerophyll forests, and only similar to 8 and 6.5% in respectively shrublands (maquis) and rain forests, which are the most original ecosystems in {N}ew {C}aledonia. {T}he endemicity is relatively low (64%) compared to the global flora (75% of endemism). {T}hree endemic genera are exclusively climbers ({A}rtia, {B}algoya and {C}lematepistephium). {T}he diversity of climbing plants is concentrated within few families: similar to 29% belonging to {A}pocynaceae and more than half of the species are included in just four families.}, keywords = {{C}hecklist ; climbing plants ; climbing mechanism ; endemism ; functional ; traits ; {I}sland diversity ; lianas ; {N}ew {C}aledonia ; {NOUVELLE} {CALEDONIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}otany {L}etters}, volume = {170}, numero = {3}, pages = {439--448}, ISSN = {2381-8107}, year = {2023}, DOI = {10.1080/23818107.2023.2234442}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010088304}, }
