@article{fdi:010088298, title = {{U}ntangling biocultural and socioeconomical drivers of {A}frican plum tree ({D}acryodes edulis) local nomenclature along a rural-urban gradient in {C}entral {C}ameroon}, author = {{L}emoine, {T}. and {R}imlinger, {A}. and {D}uminil, {J}{\'e}r{\^o}me and {L}eclerc, {C}. and {L}abeyrie, {V}. and {T}sogo, {M}. and {C}arri{\`e}re, {S}t{\'e}phanie {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n {C}ameroon, the {A}frican plum tree ({D}acryodes edulis [{G}. {D}on] {H}. {J}. {L}am) is widely cultivated for its fruits, which contribute significantly to household food security and economy. {I}n order to analyze the links between the social and ecological systems that result in the remarkable fruit diversity, we focused on how the important varietal diversity of {A}frican plums was perceived and named by tree owners. {W}e conducted semi-structured interviews in {C}enter-{C}ameroon with 142 people belonging to the {B}eti ethnic group, in urban ({Y}aounde), peri-urban and rural areas, and analyzed the data qualitatively and quantitatively. {A}long this urbanization gradient linking production to consumption regions, 158 different translated names were recorded. {M}ost names (80%) were cited once, but some names based on fruit size and taste were common across the gradient. {A}lthough the highest total number of names was recorded in the rural site, many different names were also found along the urban-rural gradient. {W}e did not detect difference in the number of named {A}frican plums between respondents with different characteristics. {T}he local classification of {A}frican plums among the {B}eti was structured predominantly according to morphological and organoleptic criteria, but also to symbolic and practical criteria. {A}frican plums' names were based on people's fruit preferences, that favor large, oily, and blue to black fruits, and disregard pink-colored watery plums. {T}his study is an entry point to explore the rising trade and thus ongoing domestication of the {A}frican plum tree from an often neglected perspective, that of local nomenclature.}, keywords = {{B}eti ethnic group ; {C}entral {A}frica ; {D}acryodes edulis ; {D}omestication ; {E}thnobotany ; {L}ocal nomenclature ; {CAMEROUN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{H}uman {E}cology}, volume = {51}, numero = {}, pages = {721--736}, ISSN = {0300-7839}, year = {2023}, DOI = {10.1007/s10745-023-00427-8}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010088298}, }
