@article{fdi:010088272, title = {{L}ow knowledge of antiretroviral treatments for the prevention of {HIV} among precarious immigrants from sub-{S}aharan {A}frica living in the greater {P}aris area : results from the {M}akasi project}, author = {{C}oulibaly, {K}. and {G}osselin, {A}. and {C}arillon, {S}{\'e}verine and {T}aeron, {C}. and {M}biribindi, {R}. and {D}esgr{\'e}es du {L}oû, {A}nnabel}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}ntroduction {I}n {F}rance, combination prevention tools, particularly antiretroviral treatment for {HIV} prevention has been available for several years. {W}e described the knowledge of these antiretroviral treatments among immigrants from sub-{S}aharan {A}frica, who are particularly affected by {HIV}, and the factors associated with this knowledge. {M}ethods {T}he data come from the {M}akasi study, which was conducted between 2019 and 2020 among precarious immigrants from sub-{S}aharan {A}frica recruited through a community-based outreach approach in the greater {P}aris area (n = 601). {W}e described levels of knowledge of {HIV} treatment effectiveness ({HTE}), treatment as prevention ({T}as{P}), post-exposure prophylaxis ({PEP}), and pre-exposure prophylaxis ({P}r{EP}), by sex with chi2 test. {W}e investigated factors associated with their knowledge with logistic regressions adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics, living conditions and sexual behaviors (p <= 0.2). {R}esults{R}espondents were mostly men (76%), from {W}est {A}frica (61%), in precarious situation: 69% were unemployed, 74% were undocumented and 46% had no health coverage. {A}mong this population, knowledge of {HIV} preventive treatments was heterogeneous. {W}hile {HTE} was well known (84%); {T}as{P} was known by only half of the respondents (46%), and {PEP} and {P}r{EP} were hardly known: 6% and 5%, respectively. {M}ultivariate regressions models showed that these antiretroviral treatments for the prevention of {HIV} was better known by people with a higher level of education ({PEP}: a{OR} = 3.33 [1.09-10.20], p = 0.03; {HTE}: a{OR} = 4.33 [1.87-10.04], p<0.001), those who had a social network in {F}rance ({T}as{P}: a{OR} = 1.90, [1.33-2.73], p<0.001), those who had access to the health system and those who were exposed to sexual risks ({T}as{P}: a{OR} = 3.17, [1.03-9.69], p = 0.04; {P}r{EP}: a{OR} = 2.60 [0.72-9.34], p = 0.14). {C}onclusions {T}here is a need for specific communication on antiretroviral treatment for {HIV} prevention that targets sub-{S}aharan immigrants, particularly those who have no access to the health-care system and those who are less educated.}, keywords = {{AFRIQUE} {SUBSAHARIENNE} ; {FRANCE} ; {PARIS}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{PL}o{S} {O}ne}, volume = {18}, numero = {6}, pages = {[16 ]}, ISSN = {1932-6203}, year = {2023}, DOI = {10.1371/journal.pone.0287288}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010088272}, }
