@article{fdi:010088261, title = {{P}hylogenetics and taxonomy of the scleractinian coral family {E}uphylliidae}, author = {{A}rrigoni, {R}. and {S}tolarski, {J}. and {T}erraneo, {T}. {I}. and {H}oeksema, {B}. {W}. and {B}erumen, {M}. {L}. and {P}ayri, {C}laude and {M}ontano, {S}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he family {E}uphylliidae consists of reef-building zooxanthellate scleractinian corals distributed across the {I}ndo-{P}acific. {S}even extant genera comprising a total of 22 valid species are currently recognised. {R}ecent studies have re-organised the taxonomy of the family at the genus level based on molecular and morphological data, including a comprehensiverevision of {E}uphyllia and the resurrection of {F}imbriaphyllia. {H}ere, three mitochondrial loci (coi, 12{S} r{RNA}, and 16{S} r{RNA}) were sequenced and morphological examinations were conducted at three scales (macro/micromorphology and microstructure of the skeleton, and polyp morphology) to study the phylogeny and taxonomy of {E}uphylliidae. {W}e analysed a total of 11 valid species collected from seven {I}ndo-{P}acific localities. {T}he monotypic genus {C}oeloseris, currently in {A}gariciidae, was also investigated since previous molecular data suggested a close relationship with the {E}uphylliidae. {M}olecular and morphological phylogenetic trees were broadly concordant in the definition of genus-level clades. {A}ll analysed genera, i.e., {C}tenella, {E}uphyllia, {F}imbriaphyllia, {G}alaxea, and {G}yrosmilia, were reciprocally monophyletic based on molecular results. {C}oeloseris was nested within the family and, therefore, is formally moved into {E}uphylliidae. {U}pdated morphological diagnoses are provided for each investigated genus. {T}his study further demonstrated that a phylogenetic classification of scleractinian corals can be achieved by applying a combined morpho-molecular approach. {F}inally, we encourage phylogenetic and taxonomic studies of the euphylliid taxa not yet analysed molecularly, such as the monotypic genera {M}ontigyra and {S}implastrea.}, keywords = {coral reefs ; hard corals ; {I}ndo-{P}acific {O}cean ; integrative systematics ; mitochondrial markers ; morphology ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN} ; {PACIFIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}ontributions to {Z}oology}, volume = {92}, numero = {2}, pages = {130--171}, ISSN = {1383-4517}, year = {2023}, DOI = {10.1163/18759866-bja10041}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010088261}, }
