  abstract = {{T}he {A}merican blue crab, {C}allinectes sapidus {R}athbun, 1896 is native to the western {A}tlantic. {T}he present work reviews the spread of {C}. sapidus in the {E}uropean {A}tlantic, the {M}editerranean, {B}lack {S}ea and {S}ea of {A}zov, and identifies its first occurrence in the {M}erja {Z}erga and {K}hnifiss lagoons on the {M}oroccan {A}tlantic coast. {T}hese first and southernmost records on the {A}frican {A}tlantic widen the current biogeographic distribution of the species worldwide. {G}enetic analysis of specimens from both the {M}editerranean ({M}archica lagoon) and {A}tlantic ({M}erja {Z}erga and {K}hnifiss lagoons) coasts of {M}orocco, based on {COI} ({C}ytochrome c oxidase subunit {I}), confirmed the species sequences as being those of {C}allinectes sapidus. {M}oroccan populations have low haplotypic diversity with only two haplotypes (haplotype 1 and haplotype 7). {T}hese two haplotypes correspond to the two different haplotypes already found in the {M}editerranean. {H}aplotype 1 from {M}erja {Z}erga, {M}archica and {K}hnifiss lagoons was 100% identical to the sequences {ON}248058 in {G}en{B}ank, while haplotype 7 from the {M}archica and {M}erja {Z}erga lagoons was 100% identical to the sequences {ON}248059. {V}ery likely, the origin and pathway of colonisation of the populations established in the three {M}oroccan lagoons is the result of the expansion of the species along the {M}editerranean {S}ea and now the {A}tlantic coast of {A}frica.},
