@article{fdi:010088164, title = {{H}ospital resilience in three {COVID}-19 referral hospitals in {B}razil}, author = {de {S}ousa, {K}. {M}. {P}. and {O}liveira, {S}. {R}. {D}. and {F}urtado, {B}masm and de {V}asconcelos, {A}. {L}. {R}. and de {M}edeiros, {S}. {G}. and {C}azarin, {G}. and {S}ampaio, {A}. {S}. and {R}idde, {V}al{\'e}ry}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{H}ealth crises, such as the {COVID}-19 pandemic, challenge health systems in demonstrating resilience-the ability to cope with change, manage challenges, and adapt in order to retain their effectiveness. {U}nderstanding how such challenges affect and produce reactions in those involved in this response is extremely important. {T}his study evaluated resilience in three referral hospitals in the city of {R}ecife, {P}ernambuco, {B}razil-one public, one private, and one philanthropic hospital-by examining the coping activities adopted by the nursing staff working on the {COVID}-19 frontline. {A} multiple case study was carried out, using a qualitative approach, triangulating data from direct observations, document analysis, and interviews with 21 nursing professionals working in management and care provision. {D}ata were collected from {A}pril to {O}ctober 2020. {T}he interviews were transcribed and analyzed based on the resilience categories defined by {B}lanchet (2017): absorption capacity, adaptive capacity, and transformative capacity. {F}our themes were considered relevant to the objectives of this study: institutional support, access to personal protective equipment ({PPE}), work relationships, and fear and mental health. {A}daptive capacity was demonstrated concerning the four themes analyzed, absorption capacity was demonstrated in two themes, and no transformative capacity was identified. {T}he study highlighted that the health crisis was challenging for all the hospitals studied, regardless of their legal-administrative status. {N}o differences were observed among them in terms of resilience.}, keywords = {{COVID}-19 ; hospital ; organization ; pandemics ; resilience ; {BRESIL}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{H}ealth {S}ystems and {R}eform}, volume = {9}, numero = {2}, pages = {2205726 [9 p.]}, ISSN = {2328-8604}, year = {2023}, DOI = {10.1080/23288604.2023.2205726}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010088164}, }
