@article{fdi:010088157, title = {{G}eochemical and radiogenic isotope records of the {W}eissert {E}vent in south {T}ethyan sediments}, author = {{S}hmeit, {M}. and {C}hauvel, {C}. and {G}iraud, {F}. and {J}aillard, {E}tienne and {R}eboulet, {S}. and {M}asrour, {M}. and {S}pangenberg, {J}. {E}. and {E}l-{S}amrani, {A}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {C}retaceous marine sedimentary record is characterized by time intervals rich in organic matter correlating with positive carbon isotope excursions, often called oceanic anoxic events. {T}he {W}eissert {E}vent corresponds to the first such event in the {C}retaceous during the {V}alanginian stage. {T}he associated palaeoenvironmental perturbations, which include increasing marine surface water primary productivity, are hypothesized to have been triggered by volcanic activity from large igneous provinces, and the source of nutrients is not well constrained (continental runoff v. oceanic upwelling). {W}e present isotope ratios of {P}b, {S}r and {N}d, together with concentrations of major and trace elements, for sediments from the central {M}oroccan margin to test these hypotheses. {W}e demonstrate that the nutrient input was dominated by continental weathering. {T}he source of sedimentary material remained stable during the {V}alanginian interval and originated from an old source, probably the {A}frican {S}ahara region. {T}he radiogenic isotope signatures do not show a significant contribution of volcanic products from any known {V}alanginian large igneous province to the geochemical budget of sediments deposited on the central {M}oroccan margin. {A}lthough this does not preclude an impact of volcanic activity on the composition of seawater, it demonstrates that the erupted volumes were not sufficient to affect the deposited sediments.}, keywords = {{MAROC}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of the {G}eological {S}ociety}, volume = {180}, numero = {3}, pages = {[15 ]}, ISSN = {0016-7649}, year = {2023}, DOI = {10.1144/jgs2022-023}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010088157}, }
