@article{fdi:010087970, title = {{A}nnual plasticity of the trophic niche of the bridled tern {O}nychoprion anaethetus in {C}uba}, author = {{G}arcia-{Q}uintas, {A}. and {B}arbraud, {C}. and {B}ustamante, {P}. and {L}orrain, {A}nne and {D}enis, {D}. and {L}anco, {S}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he trophic ecology of the {B}ridled {T}ern {O}nychoprion anaethetus is poorly understood despite its great abundance in tropical and subtropical regions. {I}mportant breeding colonies are located in the {C}aribbean, where significant human disturbances occur and where coverage by marine protected areas is still largely insufficient. {B}ridled {T}ern populations are likely to experience considerable variation in trophic niche throughout their annual cycle, especially between the non-breeding and breeding phases as they change their feeding areas. {I}n this study, we assessed the year-round variability of the {B}ridled {T}ern isotopic niche (delta 15{N} and delta 13{C}) from two breeding areas in {N}orth {C}entral {C}uba, as a proxy of its trophic niche. {F}eathers, down and blood samples were taken from adults and chicks, representing four life cycle phases of this species (non-breeding, pre-laying, incubation and chick-rearing). {O}verall, {B}ridled {T}erns occupied a narrow and relatively plastic isotopic niche, along the studied life cycle phases. {T}he largest variability occurred between the non-breeding and the pre-laying phases, showing a marked reduction of the niche breadth. {P}atterns of niche variability differed among breeding areas only during the incubation phase. {C}onsidering that adult females of {B}ridled {T}ern rely on few prey species during the pre-laying, this life cycle phase is a period of high vulnerability for the {C}uban colonies.}, keywords = {{CUBA} ; {ZONE} {TROPICALE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}rdeola}, volume = {71}, numero = {2}, pages = {277--290}, ISSN = {0570-7358}, year = {2024}, DOI = {10.13157/arla.71.2.2024.ra4}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010087970}, }
