@article{fdi:010087801, title = {{A} single origin of leaflessness in {A}fro-{M}alagasy angraecoids ({O}rchidaceae, {A}ngraecinae)}, author = {{F}arminhao, {J}. and {B}iteau, {J}. {P}. and {Y}akhouba, {D}. and {S}avignac, {M}arie and {S}imo-{D}roissart, {M}. and {D}roissart, {V}incent and {S}onke, {B}. and {S}tevart, {T}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{M}icrocoelia and the monospecific {T}aeniorrhiza and {C}hauliodon are notable among {A}frotropical angraecoid orchids for being leafless. {H}owever, the affinity among these genera was not addressed in previous molecular phylogenetic studies, thus precluding the understanding of how many times has leaflessness evolved in angraecoids. {T}he discovery of an additional species ascribable to {T}aeniorrhiza in {G}abon, and a revision of all material referrable to this genus in herbarium collections, created the possibility to investigate the phylogenetic position of {T}aeniorrhiza relative to {M}icrocoelia and {C}hauliodon. {B}ased on phylogenetic inference using {ITS}-1 and two plastid regions (mat{K}/trn{K}, trn{L}-trn{F}), and including 20 of the 34 species of {M}icrocoelia recognised prior to our study, we here demonstrate that {T}aeniorrhiza and {C}hauliodon are deeply imbedded in {M}icrocoelia, and are thus treated here as synonyms of the last. {A}ccordingly, we describe the novelty from {G}abon as a new species of {M}icrocoelia: {M}icrocoelia nguemae sp. nov. {T}he new species is illustrated with colour photographs, and also with line drawings. {I}ts preliminarily {IUCN} conservation status is provided. {T}he novelty is notable for the dorsiventrally asymmetric distribution of pneumathodes along its roots and for bearing the longest lip spur in this {A}fro-{M}alagasy epiphytic genus. {T}he new phylogenetic framework suggests a single origin of leaflessness in {A}frotropical angrecoids and reveals the informative value of the rostellum to reconstruct relationships within {M}icrocoelia. {T}his serves as the basis of a newly proposed sectional treatment for {M}icrocoelia, recognising 37 species, one new section, a new status for the defunct genus {E}ncheiridion and the redefinition of {M}icrocoelia sect. {M}icrocoelia and sect. {B}rachyglossa.}, keywords = {{E}pidendroideae ; epiphyte ; {M}adagascar ; shadehouse ; systematics ; {T}ropical ; {A}frica ; {AFRIQUE} ; {MADAGASCAR} ; {ZONE} {TROPICALE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{T}axon}, volume = {72}, numero = {3}, pages = {486--500}, ISSN = {0040-0262}, year = {2023}, DOI = {10.1002/tax.12932}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010087801}, }
