@article{fdi:010087800, title = {{A}n overview of grey mullet ({M}ugilidae) global occurrence and species-rich ecoregions, with indications of possible past dispersal routes within the family}, author = {{W}hitfield, {A}. {K}. and {D}urand, {J}ean-{D}ominique}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}his review examines the published literature on the distribution and species richness of the family {M}ugilidae around six continents as well as their phylogenetic relationships in a time-calibrated tree. {T}hree mugilid species-rich regions were identified globally, namely the {C}oral {T}riangle, southern {A}sia and southern {A}frica, all of which have between 16 and 18 morphologically recognized species. {T}wo of the species hotspots are tropical, and only southern {A}frica incorporates temperate waters. {T}he centre of mugilid evolution and then global dispersion appears to be located in the tropical waters of the {I}ndo-{P}acific. {S}peciation within the family was promoted mainly by plate tectonics, eustatic sea-level changes, tropical climate and high habitat diversity within this region. {T}he number of these tropical species that radiated out to the coastal waters of {A}frica and {A}merica was clearly less than the number that remained in the central {I}ndo-{P}acific region. {N}onetheless, access by tropical mugilid species was greater to {A}frica than the {A}mericas because of the direct tropical and subtropical coastal connectivity to the former continent. {T}his enabled more tropical mugilids to reach {A}frica than {A}merica, with the latter probably relying on {P}alaeocene "island hopping" or "rafting" to move eastwards across the {P}acific {O}cean. {I}n addition, tropical mugilids were able to access warm western and central {A}frican coastal waters from the {P}acific prior to the closure of the {T}ethys {S}ea gap in the eastern {M}editerranean and prior to the development of the cool {B}enguela {C}urrent upwelling off the southwest {A}frican coast, and from {A}merica through at least two transatlantic rafting events.}, keywords = {biogeography ; distribution ; evolution ; hotspots ; mugilids ; {ATLANTIQUE} ; {MEDITERRANEE} ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN} ; {PACIFIQUE} ; {AFRIQUE} ; {AMERIQUE} ; {ASIE} ; {OCEANIE} ; {EUROPE} ; {MER} {NOIRE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {F}ish {B}iology}, volume = {103}, numero = {2}, pages = {202--219}, ISSN = {0022-1112}, year = {2023}, DOI = {10.1111/jfb.15450}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010087800}, }
