@article{fdi:010087798, title = {13-year population survey of the critically endangered {E}uropean eel in the southern {M}editerranean region ({A}lgeria)}, author = {{T}ahri, {M}. and {P}anfili, {J}acques}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A} 13-year biomonitoring survey was carried out on the {E}uropean eel, {A}nguilla anguilla for the first time in {N}orth {A}frica ({A}lgeria) where there is a serious lack of information on the species. {T}he study targeted specimens populating the only four sites where the species is both potentially present and legally exploited ({L}ake {O}ubeira, {L}ake {T}onga, {M}ellah lagoon and {M}afragh estuary). {A} total of 1370 individuals were sampled ranging from 17 to 113 cm in length, 19 to 2642 g in weight and 0.7 months to 6.6 years old, age being estimated from otolith growth marks. {O}tolith interpretation and age estimation were generally unambiguous at all four sites. {A}ccording to the {EELREP} silvering index, the highest proportion of silver females was captured in fresh water ( 46% in {L}ake {O}ubeira and 25% in {L}ake {T}onga), whereas a third were present in brackish water ({M}afragh and {M}ellah). {T}he sex ratio was in favour of females, and silver males were found to mature early (mean length 40 +/- 1 cm, mean weight 123 +/- 28 g and mean age 2 +/- 0.6 years). {G}rowth differed at the four sites, and the growth rate was highest in {L}ake {O}ubeira and asymptotic length highest in {M}ellah lagoon. {M}etamorphosis from the yellow resident stage to the silver migrating stage occurred very early in the eels' continental life ( between 3 and 4 years of age). {R}esults highlight rapid growth in these {A}lgerian sites, and earlier silvering than in eels living in {E}uropean waters, suggesting different life-history traits of {A}. anguilla in {N}orth {A}frican waters, influenced by environmental conditions.}, keywords = {{A}nguilla anguilla ; conservation ; endangered species ; growth ; {N}orth {A}frica ; silvering ; {ALGERIE} ; {MEDITERRANNEE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {F}ish {B}iology}, volume = {102}, numero = {}, pages = {1492--1502}, ISSN = {0022-1112}, year = {2023}, DOI = {10.1111/jfb.15396}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010087798}, }
