@article{fdi:010087721, title = {{P}oriferans rift apart : molecular demosponge biodiversity in {C}entral and {F}rench {P}olynesia and comparison with adjacent marine provinces of the {C}entral {I}ndo-{P}acific}, author = {{G}alitz, {A}. and {E}kins, {M}. and {F}olcher, {E}. and {B}uttner, {G}. and {H}all, {K}. and {H}ooper, {J}. {N}. {A}. and {R}eddy, {M}. {M}. and {S}chatzle, {S}. and {T}homas, {O}. {P}. and {W}orheide, {G}. and {P}etek, {S}ylvain and {D}ebitus, {C}{\'e}cile and {E}rpenbeck, {D}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he distribution of marine sponges in the tropical {S}outhwest {P}acific {O}cean is largely unexplored despite the vital ecological role of sponges in coral reefs and their value as sources of metabolites for drug design. {S}everal collection campaigns to the {F}rench {P}olynesian archipelagos ({S}ociety, {M}arquesas, {T}uamotu, {G}ambier, and {A}ustral) were conducted to assess the bio- and chemodiversity of the island groups. {I}n the course of these scientific expeditions, more than 200 identified sponge specimens were acquired, for which we were able to assign 102 {M}olecular {O}perational {T}axonomic {U}nits ({MOTU}s). {B}ased on these {MOTU}s, we assessed, in the largest analysis of its kind for this area to date, the sponge composition and faunistic overlaps of the marine province {S}outheast {P}olynesia with {M}arquesas and {C}entral {P}olynesia. {W}e also compared the sponge fauna of these {E}astern {I}ndo-{P}acific provinces with marine provinces of the adjacent {C}entral {I}ndo-{P}acific realm. {O}ur findings corroborate that sponge faunal similarity within marine realms is higher than among realms, and follows the marine barriers to gene flow observed for other taxa. {W}e detected high levels of provincial endemism for marine sponges, consistent with findings from other {I}ndo-{P}acific regions. {A}t the level of province, geographical distance and ocean surface currents influence faunal similarity, and constitute the primary factors for the connectivity of sponge faunas between the disjunct and remote island groups in the tropical {S}outhwest {P}acific {O}cean.}, keywords = {{M}arine provinces ; {E}coregions ; {M}arquesas ; {T}uamotu ; {O}ceania ; {D}ispersal ; {OCEANIE} ; {POLYNESIE} {FRANCAISE} ; {WALLIS} {ET} {FUTUNA}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}iodiversity and {C}onservation}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {[26 p.]}, ISSN = {0960-3115}, year = {2023}, DOI = {10.1007/s10531-023-02613-y}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010087721}, }
