  abstract = {{G}iuseppe {R}addi collected in the state of {R}io de {J}aneiro, {B}razil, from {N}ovember 1817 to {J}une 1818. {H}e published 12 new names in the family {P}iperaceae in an article that appeared in 1828. {R}addi's article has not been cited in specialized literature and these names were never properly studied. {I}n the present study, these names are typified, and their identity is clarified. {F}ive new combinations are here presented, namely {P}eperomia callitrichoides, {P}. catesbaeifolia, {P}. cylindrica, {P}. gracillima, and {P}. plantaginifolia. {T}he new name {P}iper raddianum is published, honoring him and his botanical accomplishments. {I}n addition, the names {P}iper scutatum, {P}iper scolopendrifolium, {P}iper truncatum, {P}iper fluminense, {S}teffensia ampla (equivalent to {P}iper amplum), {P}iper variabile, {P}iper catesbaeafolium, {P}iper cylindricum, {P}iper pumilum, {P}eperomia martiana, and {P}iper gracillimum are here lectotypified.},
