@article{fdi:010087433, title = {{F}rom seasonal flood pulse to seiche : multi-frequency water-level fluctuations in a large shallow tropical lagoon ({N}okouacutee {L}agoon, {B}enin)}, author = {{C}haigneau, {A}lexis and {O}kpeitcha, {O}. {V}. and {M}orel, {Y}. and {S}tieglitz, {T}homas and {A}ssogba, {A}. and {B}enoist, {M}organe and {A}llamel, {P}ierre and {H}onfo, {J}. and {S}akpak, {T}. {D}. {A}. and {R}etif, {F}. and {D}uhaut, {T}. and {P}eugeot, {C}hristophe and {S}ohou, {Z}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}his study investigated the main water-level ({WL}) variability modes of {N}okou{\'e} {L}agoon in {B}enin ({W}est-{A}frica). {T}he average {WL} ranges between 1.3 and 2.3 m between the low-and high-water seasons. {S}easonal as well as weak interannual variations between 2018 and 2019 are driven by rainfall regime over the catchment and associated river inflow. {A}t sub-monthly scales, the lagoon is tidally choked: ocean tides can reach 90 cm, whereas in the lagoon semi-diurnal and diurnal tides hardly reach few centimeters. {C}hoking conditions vary with river inflow and ocean tide amplitude, correctly represented by a simple tidal choking model. {D}iurnal modulation and asymmetry of the tide are stronger (weaker) during high (low) water period. {W}e also observed {WL} variations of +/- 5-10 cm at a fortnightly frequency, stronger during wet (high-water) season. {S}uperimposed on the seasonal, fortnightly and tidal {WL} variations, we further observed short-term high-frequency seiche events. {M}ostly observed during dry (low-water) conditions, they are characterized by typical standing-wave oscillations of 5-10 cm amplitudes and 3 h periods. {T}hey are forced by the passage of fast-moving squall-lines that induce strong wind variations, heavy rainfalls and rapid drop-off of the air temperature. {R}esults obtained in this study provide useful metrics for the validation of flood forecasting models to be implemented in {B}enin, and elsewhere on the {W}est {A}frican coastline.}, keywords = {{W}ater -levels ; {L}agoons ; {T}ides ; {S}eiches ; {N}okou{\'e} ; {W}avelet analysis ; {BENIN} ; {GOLFE} {DE} {GUINEE} ; {ZONE} {TROPICALE} ; {NOKOUE} {LAC}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}stuarine {C}oastal and {S}helf {S}cience}, volume = {267}, numero = {}, pages = {107767 [12 p.]}, ISSN = {0272-7714}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.1016/j.ecss.2022.107767}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010087433}, }
