@article{fdi:010087418, title = {{I}mplication of stratospheric aerosol geoengineering on compound precipitation and temperature extremes in {A}frica}, author = {{O}bahoundje, {S}. and {N}guessan-{B}i, {V}. {H}. and {D}iedhiou, {A}rona and {K}ravitz, {B}. and {M}oore, {J}. {C}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}hree {C}oupled {M}odel {I}ntercomparison {P}roject 5 ({CMIP}5) models that simulated the {G}4 experiment of the {G}eoengineering {M}odel {I}ntercomparison {P}roject ({G}eo{MIP}) were used to investigate the impact of stratospheric aerosol injection ({SAI}) on combined temperature and precipitation extremes in {A}frica that can have greater negative impacts on human and the environment than individual rainfall or temperature extremes. {T}he examined compound extremes included the dry ({R}-warm vertical bar dry and {R}-cold vertical bar dry) and wet ({R}-warm vertical bar wet and {R}-cold vertical bar wet) modes assessed during the injection ({SAI}, 2050-2069) and post-injection (post{SAI}, 2070-2089) periods compared with the historical period (1986-2005). {W}e found a significant projected change in the occurrence of both wet and dry modes during {SAI} and post{SAI} related to the historical period. {T}he magnitude and sign of this change depend on the season and the geographical location. {D}uring the {SAI} and post{SAI}, the wet ({R}-warm vertical bar wet and {R}-cold vertical bar wet) modes are projected to be significantly lower while the dry modes are noted to increase in a large part of {A}frican continent depending on the season and the geographical location and may consequently leads to an increase of the droughts prone areas. {T}he termination effect is noted to reduce the occurrence of dry modes, which may reduce the potential negative effects of the injection after halting. {A}s the effect may vary from one region to another and according to the season, it suggested assessing the key sector impacts of {SAI}. {T}hus, this change in dry modes due to {SAI} could affect all activities which depend on water resources such as water supply, agriculture and food production, energy demand, and production with adverse effects on health, security, and sustainable development, but this needs to be assessed and quantified at regional scales.}, keywords = {{G}eo{MIP} ; {C}ompound extremes ; {S}tratospheric aerosol injection ; {I}njection effect ; {T}ermination effect ; {AFRIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{S}cience of the {T}otal {E}nvironment}, volume = {863}, numero = {}, pages = {160806 [10 p.]}, ISSN = {0048-9697}, year = {2023}, DOI = {10.1016/j.scitotenv.2022.160806}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010087418}, }
