@article{fdi:010087051, title = {{E}mergence of private higher education in {A}lgeria : actors and pathways}, author = {{B}edaida, {I}.{E}. and {B}enguerna, {M}. and {M}eyer, {J}ean-{B}aptiste}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}ince gaining independence, the higher education sector in {A}lgeria has undergone several reforms to fulfil the country's requirements in terms of higher education, both to absorb the growing number of high-school graduates and meet the needs of the labour market. {T}he emergence of a private higher education sector in {A}lgeria has been slow in comparison to {E}uropean countries, the {U}nited {S}tates, {J}apan and our culturally/historically-similar neighbouring countries ({T}unisia and {M}orocco). {T}his article reveals the results of research conducted on the context, governance and development of private higher education in {A}lgeria. {T}o achieve the objectives of our research, the study was conducted on five recently-accredited private higher education institutions through field observation, documentary analysis and interviews with executives, teachers and students at these institutions. {T}he main results of the qualitative research suggest that private higher education continues to evolve through a transitional phase characterised by a gradual integration into the socio-economic framework of the country. {T}hrough these results, we contribute firstly on a theoretical and academic level by conducting the first research on the private sector of higher education in {A}lgeria; secondly, on a practical level, by providing a clear and comprehensive view of the situation of the emerging private sector in {A}lgeria.}, keywords = {{ALGERIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}conomics and {B}usiness}, volume = {36}, numero = {1}, pages = {85--104}, ISSN = {2256-0386}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.2478/eb-2022-0006}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010087051}, }
