@article{fdi:010086983, title = {{A}daptation and response of a major {P}arisian referral hospital to the {COVID}-19 surge : a qualitative study}, author = {{C}habrol, {F}anny and {T}raverson, {L}. and {H}ou, {R}. and {C}hotard, {L}. and {L}ucet, {J}. {C}. and {P}eiffer-{S}madja, {N}. and {B}endjelloul, {G}. and {L}escure, {F}. {X}. and {Y}azdanpanah, {Y}. and {Z}inszer, {K}. and {R}idde, {V}al{\'e}ry}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}ince the beginning of the {COVID}-19 pandemic, few studies have focused on crisis management of multiple services within one hospital over several waves of the pandemic. {T}he purpose of this study was to provide an overview of the {COVID}-19 crisis response of a {P}arisian referral hospital which managed the first three {COVID} cases in {F}rance and to analyze its resilience capacities. {B}etween {M}arch 2020 and {J}une 2021, we conducted observations, semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and lessons learned workshops. {D}ata analysis was supported by an original framework on health system resilience. {T}hree configurations emerged from the empirical data: 1) reorganization of services and spaces; 2) management of professionals' and patients' contamination risk; and 3) mobilization of human resources and work adaptation. {T}he hospital and its staff mitigated the effects of the pandemic by implementing multiple and varied strategies, which the staff perceived as having positive and/or negative consequences. {W}e observed an unprecedented mobilization of the hospital and its staff to absorb the crisis. {O}ften the mobilization fell on the shoulders of the professionals, adding to their exhaustion. {O}ur study demonstrates the capacity of the hospital and its staff to absorb the {COVID}-19 shock by putting in place mechanisms for continuous adaptation. {M}ore time and insight will be needed to observe whether these strategies and adaptations will be sustainable over the coming months and years and to assess the overall transformative capacities of the hospital.}, keywords = {{COVID}-19 ; emergency response capacity ; hospital ; resilience ; {FRANCE} ; {PARIS}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{H}ealth {S}ystems and {R}eform}, volume = {9}, numero = {1}, pages = {2165429 [10 ]}, ISSN = {2328-8604}, year = {2023}, DOI = {10.1080/23288604.2023.2165429}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010086983}, }
