@article{fdi:010086916, title = {{H}igh plasticity in short- and medium-scale movements in two catfish species from the {P}arana {B}asin}, author = {{A}vigliano, {E}. and {P}ouilly, {M}arc and {S}ilva, {N}. and {S}anchez, {S}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{O}xydoras kneri and {H}emisorubim platyrhynchos are catfish species of high ecological and commercial relevance from the {P}arana {R}iver ({L}a {P}lata {B}asin, {S}outh {A}merica) whose life history remains unknown. {T}he aim of this study was to reveal the nursery areas and describe the habitat use throughout the ontogeny of both catfish species from the {P}arana {R}iver using the otolith {S}r-87/{S}r-86 ratio. {O}tolith core-to-edge {S}r-87/{S}r-86 analyses were measured using a {LA}-{MC}-{ICPMS} system. {A} {Q}uadratic {D}iscriminant {A}nalysis ({W}ilks' {L}ambda = 0.029, p < 0.0001) based on the water {S}r-87/{S}r-86 baseline of the {L}a {P}lata {B}asin was run to infer the natal origin using the core {S}r-87/{S}r-86 ratio as an independent variable. {O}xydoras kneri was classified as originating from {P}araguay (35.7%), middle {P}arana (57.1%), and upper {P}arana (7.1%) rivers, while {H}. platyrhynchos was classified as originating from the middle (56.3%) and upper (43.7%) {P}arana {R}iver. {O}tolith {S}r-87/{S}r-86 time series suggested a high complexity in the stock structure of both species from upper {P}arana {R}iver, with a significant contribution of specimens originating in other areas. {B}oth species showed isotopic variations in their otoliths compatible with short- and medium-scale movements between different reaches of the {P}arana and {P}araguay rivers that could exceed 200 km.}, keywords = {{O}tolith microchemistry ; {F}reshwater migration ; {S}trontium isotopes ; {O}xydoras kneri ; {H}emisorubim platyrhynchos ; {PARAGUAY} ; {ARGENTINE} ; {BRESIL} ; {BOLIVIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}nvironmental {B}iology of {F}ishes}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {[12 p.]}, ISSN = {0378-1909}, year = {2023}, DOI = {10.1007/s10641-023-01390-5}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010086916}, }
