@article{fdi:010086912, title = {{T}wo new magnoliid ({A}nnonaceae, {L}auraceae) tree species from {M}anabi, western {E}cuador}, author = {{C}ouvreur, {T}homas and {C}ornejo, {X}. and {Z}apata, {J}. {N}. and {L}oor, {A}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{W}estern {E}cuador harbours high plant diversity and endemism. {T}he region of {M}anabi has known intense deforestation over the last decades, but lowland rain forests persist in a network of small forest fragment patches. {H}ere, we describe two new magnoliid tree species from a small privately owned forest fragment known as {L}a {E}speranza reserve, in the {E}l {C}armen canton ({M}anabi): {A}niba ecuadorica ({L}auraceae) and {G}uatteria esperanzae ({A}nnonaceae). {F}or both species a detailed morphological description, a preliminary conservation status following {IUCN} criteria, distribution maps and high quality photographs are provided. {T}his represents the second species of {A}niba known to occur in western {E}cuador, while there are 14 species of {G}uatteria documented for {E}cuador west of the {A}ndes. {A}niba ecuadorica is only known from two localities and has a preliminary {IUCN} conservation status of {C}ritically {E}ndangered, while {G}uatteria esperanzae is known from six localities and is suggested to be {E}ndangered. {F}inally, we provide a quick overview of {G}uatteria species in western {E}cuador with a key to the species in the region. {T}he description of these two new tree species underlines the important need of prospection and conservation of the remnant forests in the {M}anabi region of western {E}cuador. {W}e also stress the importance of privately owned forest fragments for biodiversity conservation.}, keywords = {{A}niba ; deforestation ; {G}uatteria ; {IUCN} conservation assessments ; {M}anabi ; region ; new species ; {EQUATEUR}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}lumea}, volume = {67}, numero = {2}, pages = {97--108}, ISSN = {0006-5196}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.3767/blumea.2022.67.02.02}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010086912}, }
