@article{fdi:010086456, title = {{S}trategic use of ecosystem services and co-benefits for {S}ustainable {D}evelopment {G}oals}, author = {{B}itoun, {R}. {E}. and {D}avid, {G}ilbert and {D}evillers, {R}odolphe}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{E}cosystem services' ({ES}) assessments can inform sustainability policies but often translate poorly into practical decision-making due to their disconnection from local challenges. {P}roblem framing is a crucial step in improving the operationalization of ecosystem studies. {F}irst, the study analyzes the challenges and opportunities for sustainability in three {E}uropean outermost regions: the {C}anary {I}slands, {F}rench {G}uiana, and {R}eunion {I}sland. {S}econd, it proposes strategies to make use of {ES} assessments as a means to address these sustainability issues. {W}e used a {S}trengths, {W}eaknesses, {O}pportunities, and {T}hreats ({SWOT}) analysis for strategic planning, extended with a {PESTEL} analysis, standing for {P}olitical, {E}conomic, {S}ocio-cultural, {T}echnological, {E}nvironmental, {L}egal, and {R}egulatory. {S}emi-structured interviews (n = 38) were conducted to identify {PESTEL} factors facilitating or impeding sustainability in the case studies. {I}nterviews were coded into {PESTEL} factors before being synthesized and reported into {SWOT} matrices. {W}e suggest seven {ES}s implementation strategies addressing these challenges from these {SWOT} matrices. {F}inally, this paper highlights the potential contributions of {ES}-based strategies to achieving multiple {U}nited {N}ations' 2015 {S}ustainable {D}evelopment {G}oals ({SDG}s). {O}n average, the strategies are expected to affect the delivery of six {ES}s. {T}he suggested strategies are expected to contribute to the achievement of {SDG}s 15 ({L}ife on {L}and), 2 ({Z}ero {H}unger), 14 ({L}ife {B}elow {W}ater), and 11 ({S}ustainable {C}ities and {C}ommunities). {T}hese results pinpoint the key factors to consider, through stakeholder consultation, when designing a practical {ES} study.}, keywords = {collaborative research design ; qualitative data analysis ; socio-ecological system ; strategic decision-making ; {SWOT} analysis ; {EUROPE} ; {GUYANE} {FRANCAISE} ; {REUNION} ; {CANARIAS}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{S}ustainable {D}evelopment}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {[15 p.]}, ISSN = {0968-0802}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.1002/sd.2448}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010086456}, }
