@article{fdi:010086454, title = {{T}he associations between stunting and wasting at 12 months of age and developmental milestones delays in a cohort of {C}ambodian children}, author = {{V}an {B}eekum, {M}. and {B}erger, {J}acques and {V}an {G}eystelen, {J}. and {H}ondru, {G}. and {S}om, {S}. {V}. and {T}heary, {C}. and {L}aillou, {A}. and {P}oirot, {E}. and {B}ork, {K}irsten and {W}ieringa, {F}ranck and {F}ortin, {S}onia}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{W}orldwide, over 250 million children under 5 years do not reach their developmental potential due to several causes, including malnutrition. {I}n {C}ambodia, the prevalence of stunting and wasting among children remains high. {T}his prospective cohort study aimed to assess acquisition of motor and cognitive developmental milestones in early childhood and their associations with stunting and wasting. {C}hildren aged from 0 to 24 months were recruited from three provinces in {C}ambodia and followed up to seven times from {M}arch 2016 to {J}une 2019, until their 5 years. {D}ata collection included anthropometry and developmental milestones. {S}even motor and seven cognitive milestones were evaluated using the {C}ambodian {D}evelopment {M}ilestone {A}ssessment {T}ool. {A}ssociations were assessed with parametric survival models. {H}azard ratios ({HR}) below 1 stood for lower probabilities for achieving developmental milestones. {D}ata were available for 7394 children. {A}t 12 months, the prevalence of stunting and wasting were 23.7% and 9.6% respectively. {B}oth were consistently associated with delays in most motor and cognitive milestones. {S}tunting was strongly associated with delays in gross motor milestones ({HR} < 0.85; p < 0.001). {W}asting was more strongly associated with delays in fine motor development and most cognitive milestones ({HR} < 0.75; p < 0.001). {P}romoting nutritional programs in the first 1000 days to prevent malnutrition is essential to further the optimal growth and motor and cognitive development of {C}ambodian children.}, keywords = {{CAMBODGE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{S}cientific {R}eports - {N}ature}, volume = {12}, numero = {1}, pages = {17859 [10 p.]}, ISSN = {2045-2322}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.1038/s41598-022-22861-2}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010086454}, }
