@article{fdi:010086453, title = {{J}avanese {H}omo erectus on the move in {SE} {A}sia circa 1.8 {M}a}, author = {{H}usson, {L}. and {S}alles, {T}. and {L}ebatard, {A}. {E}. and {Z}erathe, {S}wann and {B}raucher, {R}. and {N}oerwidi, {S}. and {A}ribowo, {S}. and {M}allard, {C}. and {C}arcaillet, {J}. and {N}atawidjaja, {D}. {H}. and {B}ourles, {D}. and {ASTER} {T}eam}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he migration of {H}omo erectus in {S}outheast {A}sia during {E}arly {P}leistocene is cardinal to our comprehension of the evolution of the genus {H}omo. {H}owever, the limited consideration of the rapidly changing physical environment, together with controversial datings of hominin bearing sites, make it challenging to secure the robust timeline needed to unveil the behavior of early humans. {H}ere, we reappraise the first appearance datum of{J}avanese {H}. erectus by adding the most reliable age constraints based on cosmogenic nuclides {B}e-10 and {A}l-26 produced in situ to a compilation of earlier estimates. {W}e find that {H}. erectus reached {J}ava and dwelled at {S}angiran, {J}ava, ca. 1.8 {M}a. {U}sing this age as a baseline, we develop a probabilistic approach to reconstruct their dispersal routes, coupling ecological movement simulations to landscape evolution models forced by reconstructed geodynamic and climatic histories. {W}e demonstrate that the hospitable terra firma conditions of {S}undaland facilitated the prior dispersal of hominins to the edge of {J}ava, where they conversely could not settle until the {J}avanese archipelago emerged from the sea and connected to {S}undaland. {T}he dispersal of {H}. erectus across {S}undaland occurred over at least tens to hundreds kyr, a time scale over which changes in their physical environment, whether climatic or physiographic, may have become primary forcings on their behavior. {O}ur comprehensive reconstruction method to unravel the peopling timeline of {SE} {A}sia provides a novel framework to evaluate the evolution of early humans.}, keywords = {{ASIE} {DU} {SUD} {EST}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{S}cientific {R}eports - {N}ature}, volume = {12}, numero = {1}, pages = {19012 [12 ]}, ISSN = {2045-2322}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.1038/s41598-022-23206-9}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010086453}, }
