@article{fdi:010086329, title = {{C}ontributions to the taxonomy of the mugilid genus {C}helon {A}rtedi ({T}eleostei : {M}ugilidae), with a major review of the status of {C}. persicus {S}enou, {R}andall & {O}kiyama, 1995}, author = {{T}hieme, {P}. and {B}ogorodsky, {S}. {V}. and {A}lpermann, {T}. {J}. and {W}hitfield, {A}. {K}. and {F}reitas, {R}. and {D}urand, {J}ean-{D}ominique}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{N}ew data based on multigene phylogenetic analyses using the {COI}, 16{S}, and cytb genes and subsequent molecular species delimitation revealed that the mugilid genus {C}helon contains 11 species. {O}f these, two species, {C}helon sp. {A} and {C}helon sp. {B}, remained unidentified in previous studies. {W}hile {C}helon sp. {B} seemingly is a close relative to {C}. dumerili ({S}teindachner, 1870), no more detailed information were provided for {C}helon sp. {A} which is present along the east coast of {S}outh {A}frica. {G}enetic analyses performed in this study, revealed that specimens from the {A}rabian/{P}ersian {G}ulf and the {R}ed {S}ea are nested within one genetic lineage alongside {C}helon sp. {A}. {M}orphological, morphometric, and meristic analyses of specimens from all three areas demonstrated that they belong to {C}helon persicus {S}enou, {R}andall & {O}kyiama, 1995. {C}helon persicus was originally described in the genus {C}helon but was later placed either in the genus {L}iza or {P}laniliza. {H}owever, results presented herein confirm its placement in {C}helon and its distribution range is extended in the {W}estern {I}ndian {O}cean from the type locality ({A}rabian/{P}ersian {G}ulf) west to the {R}ed {S}ea and south to {S}outh {A}frica. {F}urther, the uncertain validity of the recently described {C}helon caeruleus {D}eef, 2018 from the {M}editerranean {S}ea and a previously proposed generic character distinguishing {C}helon from {P}laniliza and {P}arachelon, the shape of the paired postzygapophyses of the second vertebra, are briefly discussed.}, keywords = {{M}ugiliformes ; {P}laniliza ; phylogenetic analysis ; {A}rabian {P}ersian {G}ulf ; range extension ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN} ; {GOLFE} {PERSIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{Z}ootaxa}, volume = {5188}, numero = {1}, pages = {1--42}, ISSN = {1175-5326}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.11646/zootaxa.5188.1.1}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010086329}, }
