@article{fdi:010086000, title = {{R}ecent expansion of artisanal gold mining along the {B}andama {R}iver ({C}{\^o}te d'{I}voire)}, author = {{N}gom, {N}. {M}. and {M}baye, {M}. and {B}aratoux, {D}avid and {B}aratoux, {L}enka and {A}houssi, {K}. {E}. and {K}ouame, {J}. {K}. and {F}aye, {G}. and {S}ow, {E}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{R}ecent development of small-scale gold mining activities in {C}ote d'{I}voire is a serious threat to the environment because of deforestation, soil scrapping, pit mining, over-use of water resources and pollution of surface and ground waters by mercury, cyanides, and acids. {T}he challenge for the governance of this activity is to resolve the tension between the desired development of a small-scale mining activity, which may benefit the local and national economy, and the impacts of this activity on the environment. {T}he regulation of the exploration and exploitation of mining sites and the promotion of best practices was part of the {N}ational program for the rationalization of gold-panning in {C}ote d'{I}voire. {T}he capacity of the government to monitor the expansion of numerous mining sites disseminated all over the country is one of the key aspects for successful implementation of these policies. {T}his study explores the potential value of computer-assisted mapping of artisanal mining sites based on {S}entinel-2 imagery. {T}he detection method, using artificial intelligence and training data sets generated during field campaigns, was inspired from a previous experience in {S}enegal. {I}t was applied to a region of about 600 km(2) in {C}entral {C}ote d'{I}voire. {A}nnual maps of areas affected by the mining activities were produced for the period 2018 - 2021. {T}he areas affected by artisanal mining activities expanded from 3.39 km(2) to 8.80 km(2) in {D}ecember 2021, corresponding to an average growth rate of 0.24 km(2)/month. {T}he temporal and spatial resolution of the {S}entinel satellite imagery proved to be useful to map and quantify the expansion rate of artisanal mining sites in {C}ote d'{I}voire. {R}ecommendations are made for the integration of these tools into plans for the development of small-scale mining activities in {C}ote d'{I}voire that would be more respectful of the environment and societies.}, keywords = {{A}rtisanal and small-scale gold mining ; {S}entinel-2 ; {G}oogle {E}arth {E}ngine ; {B}andama river ; {S}urface changes ; {COTE} {D}'{IVOIRE} ; {BANDAMA} {COURS} {D}'{EAU}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}nternational {J}ournal of {A}pplied {E}arth {O}bservation and {G}eoinformation}, volume = {112}, numero = {}, pages = {102873 [16 p.]}, ISSN = {1569-8432}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.1016/j.jag.2022.102873}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010086000}, }
