@article{fdi:010085906, title = {{S}erological evidence of {Z}ika virus circulation in {B}urkina {F}aso}, author = {{T}into, {B}. and {K}abore, {D}. {P}. {A}. and {K}ania, {D}. and {K}agone, {T}. {S}. and {K}iba-{K}oumare, {A}. and {P}inceloup, {L}. and {T}haurignac, {G}. and {V}an de {P}erre, {P}. and {D}abire, {R}. {K}. and {B}aldet, {T}. and {G}uitierrez, {S}. and {G}il, {P}. and {A}youba, {A}hidjo and {S}alinas, {S}. and {S}imonin, {Y}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{Z}ika virus ({ZIKV}) and dengue virus ({DENV}) are two closely related members of the {F}laviviridae family, both transmitted by mosquitoes of the genus {A}edes, and are among the arboviruses most at risk to human health. {B}urkina {F}aso has been facing an upsurge in {DENV} outbreaks since 2013. {U}nlike {DENV}, there is no serological evidence of {ZIKV} circulation in humans in {B}urkina {F}aso. {T}he main objective of our study was to determine the seroprevalence of {ZIKV} and {DENV} in blood donors in {B}urkina {F}aso. {A} total of 501 donor samples collected in the two major cities of the country in 2020 were first tested by a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to detect flavivirus antibodies. {P}ositive sera were then tested using {L}uminex to detect {ZIKV} and {DENV} antibodies and virus-specific microneutralization tests against {ZIKV} were performed. {T}he {ZIKV} seroprevalence was 22.75% in the donor samples and we found seropositivity for all {DENV}-serotypes ranging from 19.56% for {DENV}-1 to 48.86% for {DENV}-2. {M}olecular analyses performed on samples from febrile patients and {A}edes aegypti mosquitoes between 2019 and 2021 were negative. {O}ur study showed the important circulation of {ZIKV} and {DENV} detected by serology although molecular evidence of the circulation of {ZIKV} could not be demonstrated. {I}t is essential to strengthen existing arbovirus surveillance in {B}urkina {F}aso and more broadly in {W}est {A}frica by focusing on fevers of unknown origin and integrating vector surveillance to assess the extent of {ZIKV} circulation and identify the circulating strain. {F}urther studies are needed to better understand the epidemiology of this virus in order to define appropriate prevention and response methods.}, keywords = {{Z}ika virus ; dengue virus ; flavivirus ; arbovirus ; seroprevalence ; {B}urkina {F}aso ; {BURKINA} {FASO}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}athogens}, volume = {11}, numero = {7}, pages = {741 [10 p.]}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.3390/pathogens11070741}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010085906}, }
