  abstract = {{T}he {S}tomiiformes includes about 455 species of mostly mesopelagic fishes in the families {D}iplophidae, {G}onostomatidae, {P}hosichthyidae, {S}ternoptychidae, and {S}tomiidae. {H}ere we report 55 species of the order collected during the {ABRACOS} ({A}coustics along the {BRA}zilian {CO}a{S}t) expeditions off northeastern {B}razil, including islands and seamounts of {F}ernando de {N}oronha {R}idge. {T}riplophos hemingi ({D}iplophidae), {P}achystomias microdon and {M}elanostomias biseriatus ({S}tomiidae) are recorded for the first time in the western {S}outh {A}tlantic. {E}ustomias bibulbosus, {G}rammatostomias ovatus and {P}hotonectes achirus ({S}tomiidae) are recorded for the first time in the {S}outh {A}tlantic. {E}ustomias minimus ({S}tomiidae), previously known from four poorly preserved specimens, is reported for the first time in the {A}tlantic. {O}ccurrences of 18 species are confirmed or recorded for the first time in the {B}razilian {E}xclusive {E}conomic {Z}one: {T}riplophos hemingi ({D}iplophidae), {G}onostoma denudatum ({G}onostomatidae), {A}ristostomias grimaldii, {A}stronesthes gudrunae, {B}athophilus nigerrimus, {B}orostomias elucens, {E}ustomias bibulbosus, {E}. braueri, {E}. minimus, {E}. schmidti, {G}rammatostomias ovatus, {G}. dentatus, {L}eptostomias gladiator, {M}elanostomias biseriatus, {M}. bartonbeani, {P}achystomias microdon, {P}hotonectes achirus, and {P}hotostomias goodyeari ({S}tomiidae). {D}iagnostic and distributional data for all species recorded are provided, with new anatomical information presented for {M}elanostomias bartonbeani and {G}rammatostomias ovatus. {A} checklist of the 108 species of {S}tomiiformes confirmed in {B}razilian waters is also presented.},
